Investigation continues into police shootout that left suspect injured in west Phoenix

Phoenix detectives are investigating a police shootout near the Camelback Ranch Baseball Facility on Thursday, according to a statement released by Phoenix police Sgt. Vincent Cole.

Officers answered a call about a suspicious person near 106th Drive and Colter Street just after 11 p.m. on Thursday.

While talking to a man in the area, officers said they heard a gunshot nearby and found Kristopher Johnson, 40, holding a gun.

According to the statement, Johnson fired at officers after they ordered him to drop his gun, and they fired back.

Officers said they found Johnson with a gunshot wound at a nearby home after he escaped the scene.

No officers or other people were injured during the shootout.

Johnson was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening and was later arrested, police said.

Police booked Johnson on aggravated assault and weapons possession charges.

As of Saturday morning, the investigation into the assault continued, and no other details were given.
