Investigation launched after shell casings found in Townsend school bathroom

An investigation is underway after shell casings were found in Townsend bathroom Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Townsend police department, a North Middlesex Regional High School staff member found two casings from a small caliber handgun while cleaning a bathroom in a boys locker room.

The staff member contacted principal Tim McMahon, who promptly called Townsend police.

According to a statement from Townsend police officers, School administration representatives of the School Threat Assessment and Response System team will search the locker room and school for any additional inappropriate items before students return to school on Wednesday.

Students were not in school on Tuesday due to election day. When classes resume Wednesday, officials said there will be an increased police presence.

“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are taking all precautions to ensure there is no threat at the school,” said Superintendent Brad Morgan.
