An investigation is ongoing after a Memphis Police Department officer hit a pedestrian while driving westbound on I-240 east of Airways. The pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

According to a MPD tweet, a pedestrian tried to run across the interstate and the officer was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said their involvement in the investigation has not been requested.

All westbound lanes of I-240 at Lamar were closed for a few hours this morning, but they are slowly opening back up now.
