Investigation underway into what caused propane truck accident in Doylestown

Doylestown Township police are investigating what caused a propane tanker truck to overturn Monday morning resulting in the evacuation of roughly two dozen homes and closed roads for hours.

The truck was northbound on Ferry Road near Old Iron Hill Road shortly before 11 a.m. when the driver veered off the road causing the truck to overturn. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to Doylestown Township Police Lt. Charles Ziegler.

The driver, whose identity was not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and he was taken to the hospital, Ziegler said.

Emergency responders advised an estimated 20 to 25 homes in a 2,000-foot area around the crash site to evacuate, Zielger said.  Propane is a non-toxic, colorless liquefied petroleum gas, but can be hazardous in high concentrations.

Travel on area roads was restricted for much of Monday and north and south bound traffic on Ferry Road was closed from Limekiln Road to Old Iron Hill Road until about 8:30 p.m. on Monday night.

After it was determined the truck did not leak any propane, residents were cleared to return to their homes around 7 p.m. Monday, Ziegler said.
