Investigation underway after student on UMass Boston boat falls overboard while on tour of Harbor

The University of Massachusetts Boston launched an investigation after one of its students fell overboard from a school boat during a tour of Boston Harbor.

UMass Boston hosted a reception on the university’s research boat, named Columbia Point, for students completing their summer employment with the city of Boston on Friday.

During the tour of Boston Harbor, a student fell overboard and was pulled to safety on another, passing boat, according to University officials.

“UMass Boston Police and University Health Services staff responded to the incident, examining the student for possible injuries and encouraging him to complete a full evaluation at a local hospital. After the Health Services exam, the student returned home,” reads a statement from the university.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard inspected Columbia Point and interviewed its crew members on Saturday. The UMass Boston vessel has been cleared to return to service.

The university said it will conduct its own investigation into the incident.
