The Sumner County Courthouse, still under construction in Gallatin, caught fire Sunday evening.

Heavy flames extended toward the sky from the roof about 8 p.m. prompting a response from Gallatin Fire and police personnel, the Sumner County Sheriff's Office and several surrounding fire agencies for assistance.

According to the city's Facebook page, the fire seemed isolated to the roof.

By 9:30 p.m., the Sumner County Emergency Management agency said the fire had been knocked down and firefighters were working to extinguish hot spots on the roof.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Construction on the courthouse began in April 2021 and was estimated to open next year.
