What investigators know and don’t know about Friday’s murder of a transgender woman

Three days after the Friday night shooting death of Pompano Beach transgender woman NUK Black, aka Bree Black, Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators don’t know who shot Black, why she was shot, or even how she was shot.

And, they desperately want an eyewitness to the shooting of the 27-year-old.

“We have reason to believe there were eyewitnesses,” BSO Homicide Sgt. Bryan Tutler said on a conference call with South Florida media Monday afternoon. “I can’t speculate why they haven’t come forward.”

On the conference call, Tutler said the only witness accounts they have “are basic” and come from people who came upon the scene in the 200 block of Northwest 12th Street after the shooting. Police were called about 10:18 p.m. Friday.

Tutler said there’s also no certainty whether the shooter came and left on foot or by car.

As for whether Black was shot just because she was a Black transgender woman, Tutler said there was “nothing indicating motivation” but also “as of this moment, we have nothing to indicate she was targeted for any specific reason.”

Tracking violence against transgender or gender non-conforming people, the Human Rights Campaign said the majority of the 27 deaths in 2019 were against Black transgender women.

A group of about 25 people mourned Black in Pompano Beach Sunday, then marched across Atlantic Boulevard to Pompano Beach City Hall.
