Investigators release suspect in fatal Tuesday morning shooting incident

The Tallahassee Police Department has released a suspect they detained in connection to a Tuesday morning shooting in Frenchtown.

A man was shot and killed in a residential area of the 600 block of Dent Street after the two, who knew each other, had an argument, said TPD spokesperson Heather Merritt. Few details have been released about the circumstances of the incident, but when announcing the shooting, officials noted a suspect was being questioned by investigators.

"We quickly detained the second individual but there wasn't probable cause at the time of interview for an arrest," Merritt said.

When asked if the suspect had claimed the shooting was self defense, Merritt said she could provide no additional details. State Attorney Jack Campbell told the Tallahassee Democrat that any determination would depend on the facts of the case, which TPD is still investigating.

As of Thursday morning, no other detainments or arrests have been made, Merritt said. The case remains open.

"Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident, but did not speak with an officer on scene, to please call 850-891-4200," TPD said. "They may also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS."

This incident was one of three homicides within a single 24-hour time period in the capital city.

On Monday afternoon, a man was shot and killed in broad daylight at the Time Saver convenience store on Alabama Street. TPD arrested 42-year-old Reamon Williams for allegedly murdering Monday's victim.

The third homicide took place in the Rolling Hills Apartments Tuesday afternoon. Detectives found a man's body that Florida A&M University later confirmed was Andre Green, the university's beloved director of student activities and new student orientation.

"TPD's Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and have determined foul play is suspected in this case," TPD said in a social media incident alert. "This is an open and active investigation and updates will be provided as more information becomes available."

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday, Merritt said.
