Investors in Ruth's Hospitality Group (NASDAQ:RUTH) have unfortunately lost 24% over the last three years

For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Ruth's Hospitality Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:RUTH) shareholders, since the share price is down 27% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 34%. Even worse, it's down 11% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Ruth's Hospitality Group saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 5.1% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 10% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Ruth's Hospitality Group, it has a TSR of -24% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

While it's certainly disappointing to see that Ruth's Hospitality Group shares lost 4.4% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 14%. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it's worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. Whilst Baron Rothschild does tell the investor "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", buyers would need to examine the data carefully to be comfortable that the business itself is sound. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Ruth's Hospitality Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
