Ionia Co. dispatchers aim to get more emergency info with RapidSOS app

IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) — A new partnership in Ionia County is meant to help support first responders and save lives.

Ionia County Central Dispatch says it has launched RapidSOS, a program that provides personal information to dispatchers when someone calls 911. That can be things like where the caller or their car is and pertinent medical information.

People can make a free profile on the app by clicking here. Ionia County said the information provided will only be used during a 911 call from the phone number linked with the caller’s profile. You can also choose to connect your Apple Medical ID via the iPhone Health app, or with your Android phone.

RapidSOS isn’t the only service like this being used in West Michigan. HeartSafe Holland, a community program which trains people in hands-only CPR, recently helped launch the Pulse Point smartphone app in Ottawa County. The app alerts users when there is a cardiac arrest taking place within a half-mile of their location. The app also gives reminders on how to perform CPR and shows any nearby automated external defibrillators, or AEDs.
