Iowa Cubs hit three home runs, hand Columbus Clippers second straight loss
Thursday's game: Iowa 8, Columbus 2
Recap: John Hicks, Robel Garcia and Nelson Velazquez homered as the Cubs won 8-2. It was the Clippers' second straight loss after a seven-game win streak. Jose Fermin led Columbus with two hits. ... Iowa scored in the first when David Bote doubled, moved to third on a single by P.J. Higgins and scored on a groundout by Nelson Maldonado. The Cubs added two more runs in the fourth on a solo homer by Hicks and an RBI single by Zach Davis, scoring Narciso Crook, who had doubled. Higgins doubled in Dixon Machado in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. The Clippers bounced back with two runs in the sixth. Alex Call and David Fry scored on a two-out error by Garcia, who then homered in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Higgins' sacrifice fly in the seventh scored Davis for a 6-2 lead. Velazquez hit a two-run homer in the eighth. ... Clippers starter Adam Scott allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked one.
