Iowa election 2023: Find all the Des Moines metro election winners in one spot
Voters across the state of Iowa took to the ballot box on Tuesday to make selections in mayoral races, city council and school boards.
Here's a rundown of the election results from across the Des Moines metro.
Connie Boesen wins Des Moines mayor's race, first woman to hold the office
Following a months-long — and at moments, contentious — campaign, Des Moines City Council at-large representative Connie Boesen edged out fellow councilmember Josh Mandelbaum with just 723 votes separating the two. She will replace Des Moines' longest-serving mayor, Frank Cownie, who did not seek reelection.

Chris Coleman elected to Ward 1 seat on the Des Moines City Council
Chris Coleman won the special election Tuesday for Des Moines City Council's Ward 1 seat, putting the former at-large council member in charge of the vacant post left by Indira Sheumaker. Coleman will serve the remainder of Sheumaker's term, which expires in January 2026.

Linda Westergaard declared winner in Des Moines City Council Ward 2 race
Linda Westergaard defeated challenger Chelsea Lepley to win a third term representing northeast Des Moines on the City Council.

Incumbent Joe Gatto wins in Ward 4 Des Moines City Council race
Joe Gatto has won reelection to the Des Moines City Council, where he’ll represent Ward 4, unofficial election results show. Gatto, who has been in office since 2014, defeats Jason Benell and Justin Torres, who challenged him for the seat.

Carl Voss wins reelection to at-large seat on the Des Moines City Council
Incumbent Carl Voss has won reelection to the at-large seat on the Des Moines City Council, where he will represent the entire city for another four-year term.

Dix, Campos, Martorano elected to Des Moines Public School Board
The Des Moines School Board is no longer an all-female board following Tuesday's election of Patrick Dix to the at-large seat.
Anna Campos was elected to fill Dwana Bradley's District 3 seat on the Des Moines School Board. Board Vice Chair Kim Martorano ran unopposed for the District 1 seat.

Incumbents Matthew McKinney, Greg Hudson reelected to West Des Moines City Council
West Des Moines City Councilmember Matthew McKinney held off challenger Jennie Doke-Kerns in Tuesday's election to win a second term as an at-large council member.
Ward 2 Council Member Greg Hudson, who was running unopposed, also won a second term.

Progressive slate elected to West Des Moines School Board
Voters in the West Des Moines school district on Tuesday elected a slate of school board candidates backed by progressive political groups and the local teachers union.
Michael Andreski (16%), Elizabeth Larson (18%) and incumbents Jeff Hicks (15%) and Jill Caton Johnson (17%) won the four open seats in the district.

Johnston School Board keeps incumbents as progressive slate wins
Jason Arnold, Jennifer Chamberland (incumbent), Soneeta Mangra-Dutcher (incumbent) and Lya Williams won as a slate of candidates who were backed by progressive groups and Democratic politicians.

Urbandale voters choose Williams, Young, Van Ryswyk, Howsare to sit on school board
With six candidates vying for four seats on the Urbandale School Board, voters chose Carissa Williams, Margaret Young, Josh Van Ryswyk and incumbent Katherine Howsare.

Voters elect 3 to Waukee School Board, including 2 incumbents
Incumbents Wendy Marsh and Michael Trettin held off challengers to retain their seats on school board, according to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State's Office. The new face to the school board is Kate Boonstra.

Ankeny school board flips to progressive majority
A slate of four candidates promoted by local progressives flipped the Ankeny Community School District Board of Education, empowering a majority that could take a critical view of new state laws impacting schools and throw more support behind district efforts to improve equity.
Katie Claeys (incumbent), Shelly Northway, Stephanie Gott and Amber Romans won the four seats with a four-year term.
Amy Tagliareni (incumbent) won the seat with a two-year term.

Altoona reelects mayor, selects one new councilperson and sends other race to a run-off
Incumbent Mayor Dean O'Connor, who has served since 2018, was reelected without opposition.
Julie Stewart won a seat Tuesday on the Altoona City Council, but Jerry Evans and incumbent Vernon Willey II will be in a December runoff to determine who joins her. In unofficial results, Evans had 23% of the vote and Willey, 18%. Neither garnered enough of the vote to meet Altoona's election threshold for an outright win.

Crabb, Handy, Simmons and Slings win seats on Southeast Polk School Board
Three incumbents and a newcomer won seats on the Southeast Polk School Board on Tuesday, with Chad Crabb, Brett Handy and Lori Slings winning reelection and Kelly Simmons garnering enough votes to join the elected body.

Winners Brown, Kuhl and Meinecke earn three Norwalk City Council seats
Jason Brown, incumbent Ed Kuhl and George Meinecke won seats on the Norwalk City Council on Tuesday, emerging victorious from a field of five in unofficial results.

Baldwin, Kelly and Heuser win Norwalk School Board seats — including a victory with a one-vote margin
With six candidates, Norwalk voters picked three — Kate Baldwin, incumbent Michelle Kelly and Jacob Heuser — to sit on the board that guides the fast-growing, 3,500-student school district.
Unofficial Warren County election total Tuesday showed Heuser's 832 votes edged out Daniel Doerfler, who snagged 831 votes.

Five candidates, three incumbents, win election to Saydel School Board
Incumbents Jimmy Van Der Kamp and Gary Christensen won a full four-year term on the board, according to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State's Office. They'll be joined by Samantha McNeely and Tricia Zeis.
Incumbent Jennifer Van Houten has been elected to a two-year term to fill a vacancy on the board caused when a former member stepped down.

Polk City elects one incumbent, two newcomers to City Council
Polk City residents elected three members to the City Council on Tuesday: incumbent Robert Sarchet and newcomers Nicholas Otis and Jeff Savage.

Voters in Bondurant, North Polk, Waukee school districts pass bond issues
The Waukee Community School District sought voters to approve a bond referendum that will be used to expand Waukee High School's auditorium and replace its track and turf field, build a new transportation and operations center to serve the northern areas of the district, expand the district's central offices, purchase land for future schools and build a new elementary school. Voters approved of the bond issue, with more than 6,600 votes cast in the bond issue's favor.
Voters in Bondurant and North Polk school districts approved similar bond referendums.

Pella voters keep library independent by slim margin following failed 'Gender Queer' challenge
In a tense battle over book censorship, Pella residents voted Tuesday to protect the local library board's independence.
About 51% of voters cast ballots against a measure to give City Hall officials oversight over the library's actions and budget, according to unofficial results.

Uncontested races in the Des Moines metro
Dozens of Iowans were elected to city council seats, school board positions and even mayor in uncontested races from Ankeny, Bondurant-Farrar, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, Waukee and Windsor Heights.
