Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds keeps large fundraising advantage over Democrat Deidre DeJear

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds continues to maintain a large fundraising advantage over Democratic challenger Deidre DeJear, new campaign filings show.

Reynolds, a Republican, has more than 10 times the amount of cash on hand that DeJear has — a significant advantage that comes as a new Iowa Poll shows her with a 17-point lead in the race with under four months until the election.

Meanwhile, the Republicans seeking to unseat Iowa's longtime Democratic attorney general and treasurer have continued to outraise their opponents over the past two months as the GOP seeks to unseat the officials. But Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand maintains a large fundraising advantage over his Republican opponent, Todd Halbur.

Reynolds, who is seeking a second full term as governor, raised $768,296 between May 15 and July 14, according to records filed with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board. She spent $508,842 during that period and now has more than $5.2 million in cash on hand, up from $4.8 million two months ago.

DeJear raised $340,392 during the same period and spent $218,591. She now has $503,315 in the bank, up from about $381,614 on May 14.

DeJear’s fundraising has picked up this year after reporting a meager $8,547 in the bank at the beginning of 2022. But she remains well behind Reynolds, whose national profile rose after she gave the Republican response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address earlier this year.

Reynolds' fundraising includes donations of $10,000 or more from several construction and agriculture executives. DeJear received donations of $5,000 from former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Kum & Go CEO Tanner Krause.

Libertarian Rick Stewart trails both candidates by a wide margin. Stewart raised nearly $4,700 during the reporting period and spent just over $4,000, bringing his cash on hand to just under $17,000.

Republican challengers outraising Tom Miller, Mike Fitzgerald

Republicans have again outraised the Democratic incumbents in the races for attorney general and treasurer over the past two months.

Republican Brenna Bird — who is attempting to unseat incumbent Democrat Tom Miller, the longest-serving attorney general in the country — raised $420,709 since May 15, records show. Her total was bolstered by a $200,000 donation from the Republican Attorneys General Association Action Fund, as well as $10,000 from the Republican Party of Iowa and $5,000 from the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund, a political group that supports anti-abortion candidates. Bird spent $81,778 during the same period and now has $566,247 in cash on hand.

Miller reported raising $359,085 over the same period, an amount that includes a $150,000 donation from the Democratic Attorneys General Association. Miller also received a $10,000 donation from Democratic megadonor Fred Hubbell, $1,000 from former President Barack Obama and $5,000 from scandal-plagued former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. He now has $576,116 in cash on hand.

Bird has outspent Miller on the race, spending $176,727 to Miller’s $99,858 since Jan. 1.

In Iowa’s state treasurer race, incumbent Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald, a Democrat, raised just $4,101 in the latest reporting period, far less than his opponent, Republican state Sen. Roby Smith, who raised $86,561. Fitzgerald is seeking an 11th term and holds the record for longest-serving state treasurer.

Sand, Iowa’s other statewide Democratic official, has maintained a wide fundraising advantage in the state auditor's race compared to his Republican opponent, Halbur. Sand raised $180,442 over the past two months, well above the $2,050 Halbur reported. And Sand’s cash-on-hand advantage is even more lopsided. Sand has more than $1.1 million in the bank versus $2,929 for Halbur.

In Iowa’s race for secretary of state, Democrat Joel Miller outraised Republican incumbent Paul Pate, bringing in $4,366 versus Pate’s $3,162. But Pate has far more cash on hand, reporting $43,491 in the bank versus Miller’s $1,304.

In Iowa’s race for secretary of agriculture, incumbent Republican Mike Naig raised $62,765, bringing his cash on hand total to $193,699. His Democratic challenger, John Norwood, raised $15,792 and has $11,106 in the bank.
