In an interesting turn of events, No. 3 Blake Hauck (Waukee) falls to No. 14 Asa Hemsted (Carlisle) via decision 8-4. Then No. 11 Kaia Fox defeats No. 6 Teague Smith (Fort Madison) by decision 2-1.

After three straight top-five seeds have fallen, the same cannot be said for the 138 and 145 brackets.

8:19 p.m. The upsets just keep coming in the 132-pound bracket

7:35 Second round matches are underway!

While there are still some 220 and 285-pound matches taking place, the second round of the 106-pound bracket have started.

7:26 p.m. Two pins come in less than a minute

During the 195-pound bracket, two wrestlers made quick work of their opponents. The first was No. 9 Cade Bennethum (Ankeny) who got the fall over No. 24 Brayden Williams (Waukee Northwest) in 56 seconds. That was followed by No. 10 Kolby Gibbons (Johnston) who defeated No. 23 Ian Bohnenkamp (Cedar Falls) in 54 seconds.

7:00 p.m. No. 13 vs. No. 20 152-pound bout comes down to the wire

Underdog Ethan Riesselman (Dallas Center-Grimes) outlasts Ronan Thomas by decision 7-6, in one of the most intense matches of the night.

6:54 p.m. Classic match takes place during 145-bracket

In a match that spanned nearly six minutes, No. 11 Nolan Riddle (Fort Madison) gets the fall over No. 22 Zach Fern (Iowa City, City High).

6:29 p.m. 120-pound Payton Bright wins a close one in the first round

No. 17 Payton Bright (Ankeny Centennial) was pushed to the limit against No. 16 Mason Besler (Dubuque Senior) before the former won by decision (11-10). Making it the most tightly contested match of the round.

6:16 p.m. Few surprises in the 113-pound bracket

While the first 12 seeds advanced to the next round, No. 20 Gabe Cauthron (Spencer) bucks conventional wisdom with his fall victory (3:04) against No. 13 Ashton Grace (Ottumwa).

6:07 p.m. Connor Stickrod provides the first Class 3A upset

To kick off the 106-pound bracket of Class 3A No. 22 Connor Stickrod (Spencer) took down No. 11 Jayden Luna (Bettendorf) by fall in 1:11.

5 p.m. Class 2A team scores at the end of Day 1

Here's the top five team scores after Day 1 in Class 2A. Class 3A is set to hit the mats at 6 p.m.

  1. Osage- 47.5

  2. Mount Vernon- 33

  3. West Delaware -30

  4. Creston-28.5

  5. Sergeant Bluff-Luton- 27.5

4:50 p.m. Big upsets at heavyweight close out Session 2

Two of the three highest seeds at 285 will head to the consolation bracket after some major upsets. Columbus/WMU junior Russel Coil, the 18-seed, took down No. 2 Sam Gravert with a 5-2 decision.

No. 3 Skyler Young went down after 14-seed Wil Textor from Dike-New Hartford won a sudden victory.

4:40 p.m. KJ Fry doesn’t mess around at 195

Clarke, Osceola/Murray senior KJ Fry is a perfect 40-0 on the season after his second-round win over No. 8 Curtis Erickson. Fry earned both his wins by fall on Wednesday and wrestled for a grand total of 1:45 seconds, pinning Erickson in 1:17 and his first-round opponent in 28 seconds.

4:37 p.m. Quick work for Jace Mulder at 182

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley senior Jace Mulder took down No. 8 Kayden Blunt by fall in just 42 seconds. That highlighted the second-round action at 182.

4:35 p.m. 3-seed goes down at 170

Compared to the last two weights, 170 was pretty tame. Creston senior Kaden Street, the 9-seed, took down West Marshall’s Austin Pfantz by a 7-3 decision. Pfantz was the 8-seed, so it was an upset, technically. But Street had over 40 wins on the year, so this really isn’t that big of a shock.

But the big surprise here came a little further down the bracket. No. 3 Drake Collins lost just his fifth match of the season. Hesston Johnson of Roland Story, the 14-seed, took him down with a 9-4 decision.

4:30 p.m. More upsets at 160 for Class 2A

The No. 3 seed, Sir Brandon Watts, took a loss to Winterset’s Eduardo Garcia by fall at 2:10. Creston junior William Bolinger, the 12-seed, toppled No. 5 Mack Seaba too. He moved on thanks to a major decision, 15-2.

Logan Peyton from West Delaware, the No. 9 seed, took down 8-seed Jireh Gallegos from Carroll with a 10-7 decision. Peyton will take on the top-seed, Dawson Bond, in his next match tomorrow.

4:10 p.m. 152 brings the upsets

The last three weights all went as expected, but 152 definitely didn’t. The 12-seed, Chaz Graves from Knoxville, topped No. 5 Brent Yonkovic with a fall in 1:02.

An even bigger upset was when the 14-seed, Lucas Kral, took down No. 3 Hunter Steffans with a 5-3 decision. It marks just the seventh loss of the year for the senior.

Kral will take on 11-seed Brendan Heying from Brenton Community after he upset West Liberty’s Johsua Zeman in the second round.

4 p.m. No surprises through 145

In 132, 138 and 145, no lower-seeded wrestlers came out on top in the second round. So in those three weights, it's still the top-8 seeds vying for a state title in Class 2A.

3:40 p.m. Top seed goes down at 126

Kaiden Deitzenbach, the top-seeded wrestler at 126, lost his opening match of the tournament. He fell to Decorah freshman Mason Avila by a 4-2 decision. This marks the first loss for any No. 1 seed at the 2023 tournament.

Deitzenbach isn’t eliminated from the tournament, though. He’ll still have a chance to medal by working his way through the consolation bracket starting tomorrow.

3:35 p.m. Lower-seed pulls major decision at 120

In the second round of the 120 weight class, 9-seed Shane Hanford earned a 13-4 major decision over No. 8 Caelan Oakes-Sudhish.

Christian Ahrens, the 12-seed, took down No. 5 CJ Davis from Notre Dame Burlington as well with a 9-4 decision.

3:30 p.m. 113 goes as expected, for the most part

Jonah Luensman of Monticello, the 10-seed, took down No. 7 Cael McCabe with a 5-0 decision to reach the quarterfinals.

3:25 p.m 106 second round did not disappoint

The second round at the smallest weight had plenty of upsets. Jayson Stevens, the 12-seed, took down No. 5 Mitchell Schmauss with a 7-2 decision. He only had one loss on the season before taking on Stevens.

The 10-seed, Klayten Perreault from Mount Vernon, took down No. 7 Wyatt Stewart with a 20-16 decision.

3:20 p.m. Class 2A team scores after opening round

Here are the top-5 team scores at the end of Class 2A’s opening round.

  1. Creston- 17.5

  2. Atlantic-16, Williamsburg-16

  3. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley- 15

  4. Crestwood, Cresco- 14

It's important to note there is a very long way to go still before these truly mean anything.

3:15 p.m. One surprising result in 220

All the seeds that were slated to advance reached the second round except for one. Ashtin Williams, the 22-seed, took down No. 11 Cole Binning with an 8-7 decision.

Outside of that, freshman Mason Koehler put in an impressive performance, pinning his opponent in just 44 seconds to move on to the second round.

3:00 p.m. 21-seed advances in 195

Corbyn Palmer from Waukon toppled No. 12 Ethan Peterson from Charles City by fall in 6 minutes flat. Palmer will take on Zane Bendorf in the second round. He's got a 41-4 record this year, so Palmer has his work cut out for him.

2:50 p.m. 182 sees a 21-seed advance

Parker Moritz, a 21-seed, took down No. 12 Kyler Ricard from Eddysville-Blakesburg-Freemont. Moritz won by fall in 3:01.

He'll take on Jackson Boese, the 5-seed, later this afternoon.

2:40 p.m. Live results are back!

We just got a big results dump, so we’re working our way through. But here are some highlights as the first round wraps up across all weights.

  • At 120, No. 20 Connor Pickerell came away with a win over Kale Wieland by tiebreaker.

  • At 126, No. 22 Wes Martin earned a trip to the second round with a 1:31 pin of Jax Miller.

  • Austin Mason, the 18-seed from Webster City at 170, topped Atlantic’s Jarrett Armstrong. Mason earned a fall victory in 5:30.

  • Also at 170, the 23-seed, Max Dalton from Woodward-Granger, earned a 6-4 decision over the 10-seed, freshman Brian Snyder.

2:15 p.m. Live wrestling action now up to 160 weight class

Live results still aren't updating here on-site or online. There's been no major Earth-shattering upsets through the first round so far. But we don't yet have any specifics about full results from all the matches going on.

We will update this as soon as results start to roll through.

2:00 p.m. Slight technical issues here at The Well

Live results don't seem to be updating in real time at the moment. So far, all we know is that at 106, No. 17 Austin Hansen of Lincoln Central took down Ryan Hartwig, the 16-seed, from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. Hansen earned a fall in 1:49 to advance to the second round, which will be held later Wednesday afternoon.

11:40 a.m. 13, 11-seeds reach third round at 145

They’ll head into the consolation bracket to try and work their way back to a medal place starting tomorrow morning.

At 126, the seeding stood strong too, but there were some pretty impressive results. Two-seed Kolton Munson earned a victory by fall in just 45 seconds and 3-seed Corbin Reisz won by major decision, 17-4.

11:10 Let's check in on the team scores

Lucas Oldenkamp, a 10-seed at 106, is off to Thursday's third round after defeating 7-seed Ryan Groom with a 4-3 decision.

11 a.m. First round is officially done

Heavyweight brought with it three lower-seeded wrestlers winning.

Nolan Delong from Durant, a 20-seed, took down Jace Henderson 3-2 in a tiebreaker.

Joseph Sanders advanced as a 19-seed by beating Trace Goemaat by fall in just 39 seconds. Derek Hilsenbeck, an 18-seed from Waspie Valley, defeated Landon Pratt by fall in 4:49 to advance to the winners’ bracket.

Eighteen seed Tate Dierking from Southeast Warren defeated 15-seed Ayden Phippen by fall in 2:21.

10:45 a.m. Another 17-seed winning at 195

Parker Timp, a 17-seed from South Winneshiek, earned a fall in 3:41 over 16-seed Colin Jacobs.

Corbin Hill, a 22-seed took down Iowa City Regina's Christopher Waikel by fall in 3:51.

10:35 a.m. 182 brings two lower-seed victories

A 17 seed beating a 16 seed is hardly a shock, but Logan Montgomery got it done by earning a fall in 50 seconds against Raiden Doty.

Ryan Funke, a 21-seed from Beckman Catholic, took down 12-seed Tate White with a fall in 3:01.

10:30 a.m. Plenty of surprises at 170

The shocking results came often at 170. A 21-seed, Kaden Bullerman from South Winneshiek, earned a 5-2 decision over 12-seed Logan Wearmouth.

Kaedon Lindsay, a 20-seed, came away with a fall in 1:13 over Hayden Huen from Underwood.

Nineteen-seed Owen Hoover earned an 11-1 major decision over Regan Witt from Saint Ansgar.

Ian Kohren, an 18-seed, won a 2-1 decision over Matthias Kohl.

10:25 a.m. 160 looking pretty much as expected

Only one lower-seeded wrestler came away with a win in the 160 class. Jake Moore from Sigourney-Keota, a 19-seed, earned a fall victory in 3:09 over 14-seed Ben Puente from AGWSR.

10:15 a.m. Rolling along through 152

Few 'surprises' in this one, based entirely off seeding.

Jackson Carey, a 17-seed, topped 16-seed Garrett Miller by fall in 4:37.

Sampson Henson, the 21-seed from St. Mary's, topped Grant Russell, the 12-seed with a 9-3 decision. He'll take on Maddox Nelson, the 5-seed, later this morning in the second round.

Jackson Kounkel, a freshman 18-seed, took down Kile Bucknell from Jesup by a 3-1 decision.

10:10 a.m. Some pretty big shocks, seeding-wise, in 145

Cale Seydel, a 23-seed, took down Cody Cox, the 10-seed from Lake Mills by a 6-2 decision. That matches the biggest upset of the day to this point.

Danny Kinsella, an 18-seed from Treynor, came away with a 9-5 decision to take a match over 15-seed Brock Nattress.

Treycen Rollene, a 21-seed who had just a 17-8 record on the year heading into the state tournament, took down 12-seed Carmine Shaw who came into the day with a 33-10 mark. Rollene won by fall in 2:42.

10:05 a.m. Opening round of 138 is in the books

Zach Harbison of Wapell, a 20-seed, came away with a win over 13-seed Korbyn Maxwell from I-35 with a 9-0 major decision Harbison will take on Don Bosco's Myles McMahon in the second round later today.

Ben Holton, an 18-seed from Hudson, took down 15-seed Evan Meadows from West Monona-Whitting with a 6-0 decision. Holton will face 2-seed Collin Holm from South Winneshiek in the second round later this morning.

9:55 a.m. First round of 132 is all wrapped up

Just like 126, the 132 bracket looks pretty much how most analysts expected it to after the opening bouts. The only match where a lower-seed won was when 18-seed Logan Christoffel, a freshman from West Branch, won a tight 4-3 decision over 15-seed Kai Carritt, a junior from Logan-Magnolia.

9:45 a.m. Through 126 with one upset in that weight

The 126 bracket is looking just as most expected it to through the first round, except for one bout. Jacob Larson, a junior 23-seed from West Hancock, topped Sawyer Callahan, the 10-seed from BGM. Larson won a tight 6-5 decision to move on to the second round in the winners' bracket.

It's important to remember this is double elimination, though. So Callahan, and every wrestler who fell in their opening match, isn't done here just yet.

9:40 a.m. The wrestling is going fast

We're already all the way through 120 here in Des Moines. There were a few more lower seeds in that weight moving on than there were in 113.

The 19-seed, Hayden Munn from Nashua-Plainfield won a 6-3 decision over the 14-seed, Kellen Oliver from Riverside.

Gavin Wiig, a freshman 18-seed, came away with a tight 3-2 decision over Braxton Bormann from Central Community.

In keeping with tradition with the other two weights, the 17-seed, Luke Guseman from Highland, defeated the 16-seed, Ethan Krall. Guseman won by fall in 1:59.

9:30 a.m. 113 bracket looking as expected through the opening round

The only lower seed to come away with a win through the first round of bouts was Nodaway Valley's Keyin Steeve, the 17-seed. He toppled 16-seed Carson Fitch from Colfax-Mingo by fall in just 53 seconds.

9:15 a.m. Some higher seeds falling at 106 for Class 1A

We're through the opening round of the 106 weight class already and for the most part, the bracket went as the seeding expected it to go. There were some upsets, though.

Atlee Dewitt, an 18-seed from Alburnett, topped Pleasantville's Tommy Booth, a 15-seed, in a major decision, 9-1.

The 19-seed, Codder Malcom from Wapello, won an 8-2 decision over 14-seed Eli Rieb.

The smallest surprise 'upset' though, was Don Bosco's Kanaan Delagardelle, a 17-seed, beating Ogden's Caleb Wisecup by fall in 1:37. That'll boost Don Bosco's already really good chances at that five-peat we were talking about earlier.

We're underway in Des Moines
