Iowa primary elections: Sonya Heitshusen wins House District 28 Democratic primary, will face Republican David Young

Sonya Heitshusen won Tuesday's Democratic primary in House District 28, which includes parts of West Des Moines, Van Meter and Adel.

Heitshusen received 72% of the vote, defeating opponent Tom Walton, according to unofficial election results.

In the general election, Heitshusen will face Republican David Young, who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before losing his reelection bid to Democrat Cindy Axne in 2018. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress against Axne again in 2020.

Heitshusen currently serves as the communications director for the Auditor of State Office. Heitshusen told the Des Moines Register she believes in fully funding public education, investing in renewable energy and providing better opportunities for Iowans living with disabilities.

Election results are unofficial until certified by the Dallas County Board of Supervisors.
