This Iowa restaurant is serving a chili burger on a cinnamon roll bun

It can't get any more Iowan than the combination of a bowl of hot, hearty chili with sweet, sticky cinnamon rolls on the side.

And what could be better than that? A chili burger with a cinnamon roll bun.

That's right.

For its January burger of the month, The Boulder Tap House at 114 S. Duff Ave. in Ames is serving a chili burger on a cinnamon roll bun.

"We all grew up with that combination," said assistant general manager Lindsay Galvin, 32. She said the idea came about as a collaboration of the kitchen team under assistant kitchen manager John Cook.

The burger is a 6-ounce Angus 80/20 blend, cooked on a flattop. It's served with homemade black bean chili and a blend of shredded Colby and jack cheeses between a cinnamon roll that's been cut in half horizontally. For $1 extra, you can upgrade to an 8-ounce burger.

The burger is $11.99 and comes with a choice of fries, coleslaw or Tap House potatoes – crispy spiral-cut chips.

Though the restaurant is not the first to come up with this quintessentially Iowan food pairing, it certainly won't be the last. The burger is available until the end of the month.

The Boulder Tap House, a regional chain, has seven locations throughout Iowa and Minnesota. But Ames is the only location serving the burger.

Besides the chili burger served on a cinnamon roll bun, the restaurant sports a sizable menu of specialty burgers, stuffed burgers and build-your-own burgers. Rounding out the food menu are appetizers, bone-in and boneless wings, sandwiches, taco platters, soups, salads, kid favorites, shakes and malts.

The restaurant features 50 beers on tap and happy hour specials from Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 p.m., and late night, Monday through Sunday, 9 to 11 p.m.
