Iowa State football vs. Oklahoma State recap: Cyclones lose another one-score game

Iowa State offensive lineman Tyler Miller waits for the snap against West Virginia on Nov. 5, 2022.

It happened again.

Iowa State lost yet another one-score game in 2022, this time 20-14 to Oklahoma State on the road in Stillwater. It's their fifth loss of the year by 7 points or less.

It's honestly shocking the game was even that close, with the Iowa State offense coughing the ball up five times. That's the most turnovers for ISU since the 2009 Cy-Hawk game when they had the ball taken away six times.

Still, the defense held strong and limited Oklahoma State to just 244 total yards, including just 57 on the ground. But it wasn't enough to overcome the copious turnovers and costly mistakes that the Cyclones' offense made.

Here's a recap of all the biggest moments from Saturday's game.

Matt Campbell says Brock out for season

Jirehl Brock, who's been an electric running back when he's healthy, is out for the season after suffering a broken foot on Saturday, according to head coach Matt Campbell.

Brock scored a touchdown in Saturday's loss and racked up 12 yards on four carries before leaving the game. He was ISU's leading rusher entering the game, having ran for 433 yards and two scores before kickoff in Stillwater. His final line on the season is 445 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

He's been pretty limited this season by injuries, though. He got less than 10 carries in five games, including Saturday's loss.

FINAL: Oklahoma State 20, Iowa State 14h

On the biggest play of the night, Hunter Dekkers gets sacked and the Cowboys will take over on downs.

One knee from QB Spencer Sanders wrapped it up.

Q4/ 0:25. Biggest play of the game incoming

Iowa State faces a fourth-and-10 from the OSU 23. Game on the line here

Q4/2:20 Cyclones force a punt, will have one more chance

Iowa State forces a three-and-out and drains just 26 seconds off the clock before the Cowboys punt it away.

ISU takes over at their own 30. They need to go 70 yards to win it with no timeouts left.

4Q/ 2:46 Iowa State elects to punt facing 4th-and-23

The punt doesn't entirely seal the win for Oklahoma State. The Cyclones still have three timeouts left. But one first down will pretty much end the game.

Q4/ 4:18 OSU adds FG, remains one-score game

Even with the field position that ISU gifted them, the Oklahoma State offense couldn't turn it into a game-sealing touchdown. The Cyclones D held them to just one yard and the drive ended in a 40-yard field goal off the foot of Tanner Brown to extend their lead, but it's still a one-score game.

OSU up 20-14

Q4/ 5:06 Iowa State stuffed on fourth down deep in their own territory

On fourth-and-1, Hunter Dekkers went with the designed QB run out of the shotgun, but got stuffed for a loss on the play.

That sets up Oklahoma State at the Iowa State 24-yard-line.

Q4/ 5:36 Xavier Hutchinson breaks another record

With a catch late in the fourth quarter, the senior WR became the all-time leader in receptions in Iowa State football history. He's up to 242 for his career now.

Today he's made eight catches for 74 yards, but has been held out of the end zone.

Q4/ 8:18 Oklahoma State has shot to land knockout blow

After an ugly drive by the Iowa State offense took just 53 seconds off the clock, Oklahoma State will get the ball back at the Cyclones' 49.

A touchdown here could really make it hard for a struggling Cyclones offense to pull this one out. Could also drastically reduce the chances of ISU becoming bowl eligible, with TCU still looming on the schedule.

Q4/ 9:18 Oklahoma State claims lead behind Spencer Sanders

Veteran QB Spencer Sanders has changed the look of the Oklahoma State offense entirely. He's already got 65 yards on eight pass attempts. He also converted the Cowboys' first third down of the day, they're now 1-for-11 on the money down.

He just helped them re-take the lead too on an eight-play, 63 yard drive that was capped off by a Sanders 14-yard strike to Jaden Nixon.

After the PAT, Oklahoma State is up 17-14.

Q4/ ISU dealing with more injury issues at RB

The running back group has been dealing with injuries all season long for Iowa State. They're showing up again Saturday in Stillwater. Jirehl Brock, who scored a TD today, is in a walking boot and done for the day, according to ESPN's broadcast. Freshman Cartevious Norton was shaken up a bit and had to come out of the game too for a few plays, but has since re-entered.

Expect a lot of Deon Silas down the stretch in this one.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: Iowa State 14, Oklahoma State 10

It looks like Mike Gundy is making a change at quarterback. The OSU head coach pulled his son, Gunnar Gundy, in favor of Spencer Sanders, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury.

Gunnar Gundy has just 103 passing yards, one touchdown and two picks in this game through three quarters.

Q3/ 0:53 Back and fourth interceptions, Cowboys keep the ball

It looked like ISU was about to force a punt, but TJ Tampa picked off Gunnar Gundy on a horrible decision when he should've just tossed it out of bounds.

But it didn't burn the Cowboys too badly. Hunter Dekkers threw an interception, his third of the day, on the very next play. Cowboys take over at the Iowa State 47.

Q3/6:03 Iowa State commits fourth turnover of afternoon

Yeeesh, you're not going to win most games coughing the ball up four times.

This time the Cyclones were driving and just outside the red zone. Dekkers found Sean Shaw for just his second catch of the afternoon, the other being a TD. Shaw turned up field, but had the ball stripped as he tried to gain more yardage. Korie Black punched it out and Nathan Latu recovered for the Cowboys.

OSU takes over at their own 23 after the turnover.

Q3/ 12:39 Iowa State offense wakes up, takes lead

The Cyclones clearly figured something out during halftime. They took the ball to open the third quarter and marched right down the field. The drive was just six plays and spanned 75 yards. Jirehl Brock capped the drive with a 1-yard run. The offense had two plays of over 20-yards on that drive. They had just one of those in the entire first half.

ISU up 14-10 now.

HALFTIME: Oklahoma State 10, Iowa State 7

That was a... weird first half. Iowa State barely has 100 total yards (116) and save for an 83-yard scoring strike, Oklahoma State would have just 66 total yards. Defenses are playing well, but they can only do so much. Both offenses have failed to capitalize on the short fields that their defense gave to them.

This game seems like it's going to be decided by a defensive score. But which unit will make that deciding play? Let's find out over the next 30 minutes.

Q2/0:36 Iowa State can't create points off turnover

Despite the good field position, the Cyclones can't make anything happen on offense. They gain just seven yards on three plays and trot out the field goal unit. But kicker Jace Gilbert can't connect on a 41-yard attempt.

Q2/2:40 Cyclones D gets turnover of their own

Gunnar Gundy was looking for another deep shot, but the ball hung up in the air far too long and Beau Freyler was able to come down with it. He had a nice return out to the Cowboys' 45. An unsportsmanlike conduct flag against OSU lets the Cyclones start this drive at the 30.

2Q/6:31 Oklahoma State strikes right back

After ISU took its first lead of the afternoon, Oklahoma State needed just two plays to take it back. Gunnar Gundy unleashed a deep shot and found John Paul Richardson in stride down the right sideline for an 83-yard score. It's the longest pass ISU has given up all season.

Cowboys re-take the lead, now up 10-7.

2Q/ 7:20 Cyclones find paydirt

After the big punt block from Darien Porter, the offense put points on the board. Hunter Dekkers found Sean Shaw in the back of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown strike. It's Shaw's first catch of the day.

Jace Gilbert adds the PAT and Iowa State is suddenly up 7-3.

2Q/ 8:23 Iowa State special teams come up huge

Finally, a positive play for the much-maligned Cyclones special teams unit.

The defense forced yet another punt for Oklahoma State, and then the ST unit came up big. Darien Porter broke through the line and got his hand on the punt. It popped up in the air and directly into Porter's hands at the OSU 9-yard line.

Let's see if the offense can do anything with that field position.

2Q/ 12:10 Oklahoma State gets points, but stays out of end zone

After the Dekkers INT set Oklahoma State in prime field position, the Iowa State defense came to the rescue. They forced a three-and-out, which led to a 37-yard field goal attempt and OSU's Tanner Brown drills it.

OSU up 3-0, but that should feel like a win to Iowa State fans.

2Q/ 14:07 Dekkers picked off again

That's the third turnover on the day for Iowa State and we're less than a minute into the second quarter. Dekkers tried to fit the ball into Dimitri Stanley, but Jabbar Muhammad was in blanket coverage and came up with the ball.

OSU starts this drive at the ISU 28. Going to be tough to keep them off the board now.

END OF FIRST: Iowa State 0, Oklahoma State 0

The Cyclones D stands up yet again after the turnover. MJ Anderson gets a sack for a loss of 11 on third down as time expires. That'll more than likely force an Oklahoma State punt from their own 42 once the second quarter starts.

Q1/ 2:14 Oklahoma State gets second turnover

Again, it was another productive Iowa State drive cut short by a turnover. Hunter Dekkers looked for Dimitri Stanley over the middle, but the pass was a bit high and tipped in the air and into the hands of Kenda Daniels.

It was a bad pass by Dekkers, but it's a drive to forget for Stanley too. He had a surefire touchdown, but he seemed to lose the ball in the sun along the sideline and the pass fell incomplete.

OSU starts their drive at the Cowboys' 27.

Q1/6:14 Cyclone defense stands tall

After a turnover by the offense, the ISU defense showed why they're the best in the Big 12. The Cyclones forced a fourth and short. Oklahoma State ran the ball up the middle, but Gerry Vaughn and Mason Chambers met the runner in the hole and brought him down for a loss.

Hunter Dekkers and the Iowa State offense get the ball back at their own 42 after the stop.

Q1/8:18 Iowa State coughs up the ball

A promising drive, Iowa State's first that entered Oklahoma State territory, ended in disaster. On Deon Silas' first carry of the game, he got met hard behind the line of scrimmage and got the ball popped out of his hands. Kody Walterscheid fell on top of the ball for the Cowboys.

OSU starts their drive at their own 39.

Q1/ 9:55 Punts galore

Not a ton going on in this one, yet. Three punts and just one first down between the two teams.

Iowa State taking the ball now after forcing a three-and-out. Their drive starts at their own 24.

Iowa State forces quick punt

The Cyclones hit the field on defense first, but got the ball back to their offense fast. They gave up a first down on the opening play, but then forced a punt after the next three plays yielded just six yards.

Hunter Dekkers and Co. have the ball now. Freshman running back Cartevious Norton getting the start in the backfield.

ISU DE Will McDonald chasing history

Iowa State senior defensive end Will McDonald is looking to make history today. He's got 33 sacks in his career. One more on Saturday and he'll tie the Big 12 career sacks record set by Texas Tech’s Aaron Hunt (99-02). He's only got four sacks so far this season, but he's got a solid matchup in this one that could see him tie, or even break, that record.

Oklahoma State has seen its quarterbacks sacked 12 times over the last five games. With a freshman making his first start in college on the other side of the line, McDonald, and the rest of the Cyclones' defense, should benefit from some inexperience and potential mistakes in that spot.

Our Randy Peterson took a deeper look into McDonald's maturation during his time in Ames over the last few years. Check that out here.
