Jeremiah Williams, the Temple transfer slated to start at point guard for Iowa State men's basketball, will miss the 2022-23 season after suffering an injury Thursday, the school announced.

“Jeremiah is an outstanding young man,” Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger said in a released statement. “It’s an unfortunate injury to happen heading into the season. Our program will support Jeremiah through his healing process to help him come back better and stronger.”

Williams suffered an injury to his left Achilles tendon, the school said.

The Cyclones had hoped Williams could fill the hole at starting point guard left by the transfer of star freshman Tyrese Hunter to Texas this offseason. Williams, who missed most of the summer with shoulder injuries, averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 assists per game last season for the Owls.

Now, Iowa State very well could turn to a freshman point guard for the second consecutive season.

Tamin Lipsey and Eli King, both members of Otzelberger's 2022 recruiting class, took the majority of point guard reps this summer with Williams sidelined. The Cyclones could also turn to Gabe Kalscheur or Jaren Holmes for a non-traditional point guard look.

Iowa State is coming off last year's shocking Sweet 16 season in which they went 22-13 overall after going 2-22 the year prior.
