Iowa State men's cross country nabs best finish since 1994; women's program places 9th

The Iowa State men's cross country team finished second nationally, the program's best effort since 1994, while the women's program placed ninth on Saturday at the NCAA cross country championships.

Iowa State's runner-up finish is the fifth time in program history the Cyclones have finished in the top two nationally. Iowa State also finished fourth in 2019.

Standout Wesley Kiptoo led Iowa State at the championship 10-kilometer race with his second-place finish in 28:38.7 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. BYU's Connor Mantz repeated as champion in 28:33.1.

Redshirt senior Thomas Pollard, from Gilbert, earned All-American honors for the first time, coming in 21st in 29:20.4. Teammate Gable Sieperda, a former Central Lyon-GLR prep, just missed earning All-American honors with a 41st-place finish in 29:31.9.

Northern Arizona won the team title with 92 points, ahead of Iowa State's 137 score.

The top-10 finish for the Iowa State women was the program's first since 2014. Callie Logue led the way for the Cyclones with her fourth-place finish in the 6K race in 19:29.8. It was the highest individual finish by a Cyclone since Betsy Saina won the national title in 2012. Northern Illinois transfer Ashley Tutt finished 50th in 20:07.2. North Carolina State won the team title.
