Iowa State Patrol: Grundy County van rollover kills 3 children, one adult, injures others

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

Three children and one adult were killed and an undisclosed number of others injured when a van carrying 13 people rolled in Grundy County about 6:50 a.m. Friday, according to Iowa State Patrol and the Grundy County Sheriff's Office.

State patrol spokesperson Alex Dinkla said in a news release that the driver lost control of the 15-passenger van on a slick stretch of westbound U.S. 20 near the Wellsburg exit.

It entered the median and rolled before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes, Dinkla said.

Dinkla said the three children who died were all under the age of 5.

"None of the occupants were using seatbelts or child-restraint devices," he wrote to the Register.

The Iowa Department of Transportation said the road was covered in snow.
