Iowa State volleyball defeats undefeated No. 1 Texas

Iowa State will play in its 16th NCAA volleyball tournament, including 15th with Christy Johnson-Lynch as the coach.

The Iowa State volleyball team played spoiler in a major way Wednesday night.

The Cyclones upended No. 1 and undefeated Texas’ perfect start to the season with a 3-2 victory at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State (13-7, 5-2 Big 12) had lost 10 straight to Texas, and the win was the Cyclones’ first over the country’s top-ranked team since 2012 when coach Christy Johnson-Lynch's program knocked off No. 1 Nebraska in Ames.

Texas had won its first 14 games of the season and its first six in Big 12 play.

The Cyclones won by the scores of 18-25, 27-25, 12-25, 27-25 and 15-10.

Maya Duckworth, Eleanor Holthaus and Annie Hatch all had 14 kills for Iowa State. Morgan Brandt had 30 assists while Jaden Newsome added 21. Brooke Stonestreet had 25 digs.

Iowa State plays at Texas Tech on Friday followed by a trip to West Virginia on Wednesday. The Cyclones’ next home match comes Friday, Oct. 28, against TCU at 6:30 p.m.
