Iowa State wrestlers beat Illinois in Beauty and the Beast event at Hilton Coliseum

The Iowa State wrestling team ran its regular-season dual-meet record to 16-2 after taking down Illinois, 21-13, on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones' 16 regular-season dual-meet victories is the most for the program under head coach Kevin Dresser. Iowa State last hit 16 regular-season dual-meet wins in 2008, under Cael Sanderson. They could hit 17 with a road win on Wednesday night against No. 4 Missouri in their regular-season finale.

On Sunday, Iowa State, No. 9 in InterMat's Division I team poll, won 6 of 10 matches to take down the unranked-yet-scrappy Fighting Illini, now 6-7. David Carr (165) and Marcus Coleman (184) both notched bonus-point wins — Carr in a 16-2 major decision over Anthony Federico, Coleman in a 20-4 technical fall over Dylan Connell.

Additionally, Caleb Fuessley secured a takedown in sudden victory to beat Maximo Renteria at 125 pounds; Casey Swiderski snapped a five-match losing streak with a 10-7 win over Danny Pucino, who's ranked No. 17 nationally at 141; and Sam Schuyler closed another door with a 5-3 win over Matt Wroblewski at 285.

The Cyclones' hiccups were minor on this day. Yonger Basitda lost a 5-3 decision to No. 19 Zac Braunagel at 197. Julien Broderson returned to the lineup at 174, but dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 11 Edmond Ruth. Zach Redding got an opportunity to wrestle two-time All-American Lucas Byrd at 133, but Byrd rolled to a 13-3 major decision.

But this dual was also part of the Beauty and the Beast event, pairing Iowa State's dual against Illinois with the Iowa State gymnastics team's home meet against Central Michigan. With an announced crowd of 8,757 inside Hilton, the wrestlers won while the gymnasts lost, 195.600-194.800.
