Iowa State wrestlers earn weekend sweep vs. West Virginia and Pittsburgh

The Iowa State wrestling team beat West Virginia 20-13 and Pittsburgh 16-15 in a pair of weekend road duals.

The Cyclones dug out of a 10-0 hole vs. the Mountaineers after dropping the first three matches of the dual and picked up bonus-point victories from Paniro Johnson and Yonger Bastida in the victory. Jason Kraisser picked up a key victory at 157 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Alex Hornfeck.

Iowa State (14-2, 5-0 Big 12) beat Pittsburgh thanks to a dual-winning takedown by Sam Schuyler at 285 pounds. Schuyler, ranked No. 10 in the nation, secured the takedown with less than 15 seconds remaining in the final bout to defeat No. 5 Dayton Pitzer, 4-3.

The Cyclones and Panthers each won five bouts, but Iowa State won on criteria by way of match points, 51-44. It was just the fourth dual in program history to be decided by criteria. Neither team scored bonus points.

David Carr beat Holden Heller 7-3 at 165 pounds for his 23rd consecutive win.
