Iowa State wrestlers top Wyoming for fourth straight win; UNI wrestling beats Air Force

Both the Iowa State and Northern Iowa wrestling teams won Big 12 road duals on Friday night.

The 15th-ranked Cyclones soundly defeated Wyoming, 32-6, for their fourth consecutive dual victory this season. They’re 6-1 overall and 1-0 against Big 12 opponents.

The 23rd-ranked Panthers notched their second dual win of the season in a 27-11 win over Air Force. Northern Iowa improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 against the Big 12.

Here are highlights from both duals:

Cyclone wrestlers dominate Wyoming in Laramie

Iowa State won the first six matches and eight out of 10 on Friday night at Wyoming’s Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. Of those eight individual wins, four resulted in bonus points:

• Ramazan Attasauov scored three takedowns, a set of back points, two more points for stalling and another for riding-time in a 12-3 major decision over 33rd-ranked Job Greenwood at 133;

• Ian Parker is now 3-0 since dropping to 141 pounds after he scored four takedowns and a reversal in an 11-3 major decision over Chase Zollman;

• David Carr, the top-ranked 157-pounder in the country, recorded his 44th consecutive win in a second-period pin over Darren Green;

• Isaac Judge, in the result of the night, recorded a first-period pin over 15th-ranked Cole Moody at 165, adding another wrench into an already unique lineup battle for the Cyclones.

Elsewhere, Kysen Terukina kicked off the dual by rallying from down 4-1 to win 7-6 over Jacob Svihel at 125; Jarrett Degen needed a third-period takedown to put away Jaron Jensen, 7-4, at 149; and 9th-ranked Marcus Coleman used a third-period takedown and riding time to defeat 17th-ranked Tate Samuelson, 4-2, at 184.

Iowa State raced out to a 26-0 lead before Wyoming got on the board. At 174, Hayden Hastings, ranked No. 12 nationally, beat 20th-ranked Joel Devine, 2-0, on an escape and riding time. At 197, third-ranked Stephen Buchanan rallied to beat No. 13 Yonger Bastida 6-4 in overtime, on a late third-period takedown and another in sudden victory.

UNI wrestling rolls in decisive road win over Air Force

After a 1-5 start, Northern Iowa found the win column against Air Force — a dual that was scheduled after the Panthers' initial dual against Northern Colorado was postponed because of Northern Colorado's COVID-19 issues. Northern Iowa won seven of 10 matches.

The Panthers won the first four matches to lead 16-0 and finished with four bonus-point wins:

• Kyle Biscoglia recorded his fifth pin of the season when he stuck Sidney Flores in the second period at 133;

• Cael Happel rolled up nine takedowns in a 20-9 major decision over Garrett Kuchan at 141;

• Austin Yant used two third-period turns to scored eight combined nearfall points in a 9-0 major over Trey Brisker, a Wilton native, at 165;

• Parker Keckeisen improved to 13-1 overall with his eighth bonus-point win, a 14-4 major over Jacob Thompson at 184.

Elsewhere, Colin Realbuto rallied from a 4-1 first-period deficit on an escape and takedown in the third period to beat Dylan Martinez, 5-4, at 149; Kyle Gollhofer, in lieu of Brody Teske again, scored two takedowns in a 6-2 win over Quinn Melofchik at 125; and Noah Glaser added a 14-8 win over Kayne Hutchinson at 197 pounds.

Northern Iowa’s three losses came at 157 (Kaleb Olejniczak lost 4-1 to Giano Petrucelli), 174 (Dajun Johnson gave up an 18-3 technical fall to Sam Wolf) and heavyweight, where Tyrell Gordon gave up three takedowns in an 8-4 loss to 6th-ranked Wyatt Hutchinson.

The Cyclones wrestle NAIA’s Montana State-Northern and Providence on Sunday in Belgrade, Montana. The Panthers return to action next weekend with a Friday-Saturday home doubleheader against Utah Valley and North Dakota State.
