Iowa State wrestling begins 2021-22 season 2-0 after defeating Army, California Baptist

AMES — The Iowa State wrestling team opened the dual portion of its season with two decisive victories over Army West Point and California Baptist here at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones topped Army, 25-9, then blanked Cal-Baptist, 39-0, to move to 2-0 on the season. They’ll host their own Harold Nichols Open on Sunday, then host the top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes next Sunday afternoon.

Iowa State dispatched both teams with relative ease on Saturday, which was expected of the 19th-ranked team in InterMat’s Division I rankings. Against Army, the Cyclones won seven of 10 matches. Against the Lancers, they swept all 10.

Collectively, that’s a 17-3 total record with nine bonus-point wins. Between both duals, Iowa State wrestlers outscored their individual opponents by a combined 197-66, and scored 50 total takedowns and allowed 10, including just two to Cal Baptist.

Six Cyclone wrestlers won both their matches, but David Carr, the defending NCAA champion at 157 pounds, was the only one to score bonus in both wins. He closed both duals with victories, first with an 18-2 technical fall over Army’s Markus Hartman, then a 14-3 major decision over Cal-Baptist’s AJ Raya.

Head coach Kevin Dresser opted to use multiple wrestlers at three weights. Kysen Terukina and Corey Cabanban won their matches at 125; at 165, Isaac Judge lost to Army’s Dalton Harkins while Austin Kraisser beat Cal-Baptist’s Josh Grant; and at 285, Army’s Ben Sullivan beat Francis Duggan and Sam Schuyler topped Cal-Baptist’s Chris Island.

The dual with Cal-Baptist was lopsided in virtually every aspect. The Lancers scored just 25 total match points, and only six of them were offensive points — a reversal from Hunter Leake at 133, and a pair of takedowns from Chaz Hallmark at 149.

The dual with Army unfolded similarly — Iowa State managed a 21-8 takedown advantage and collectively outscored the Black Knights 77-41, even though four of 10 matches were decided by two points or fewer (Iowa State and Army split those matches) — but there were a few intriguing matchups.

At 184, Marcus Coleman, ranked 16th nationally by InterMat, used a mean ride and a late takedown in the third-period to defeat 29th-ranked Brad Laughlin, 4-1. At 197, Yonger Bastida took down 20th-ranked J.T. Brown, 4-3, thanks to takedowns in the first and second period. Brown is a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier.

Iowa State senior Marcus Coleman, left, locks up with Army senior Brad Laughlin in their match at 184 pounds on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

At 149, Jarrett Degen got the nod over Ian Parker — Dresser said Parker is dealing with a small injury and will return soon — and lost to 22nd-ranked PJ Ogunsanya, 4-3. Ogunsanya, another NCAA qualifier, scored takedowns in the second and third to win. Degen then rebounded with a 17-4 major over Cal-Baptist’s Chaz Hallmark.

Tougher tests await later this season, like next weekend’s matchup with the Hawkeyes, plus a late-December meet against Purdue, late-January meetings with No. 22 Oklahoma and No. 4 Oklahoma State, and February duals against No. 11 Missouri and No. 25 Northern Iowa.

But Saturday afternoon went as expected for the Cyclones, with two decisive victories over teams to which they were clearly superior. They took care of business in workmanlike fashion, a good first step toward their larger, loftier goals for the season.
