What do you think about these state title matchups?

Dru Ayala (Fort Dodge) will wrestle Bettendorf’s Timothy Koester for the 3A 106-pound state title. Ayala (42-2) won by tech fall over Caden Leonard, and Koester (40-1) won by 4-1 decision over Southeast Polk’s Carter Pearson.

At 113, it will be Prairie’s Blake Gioimo (43-0) and Waukee Northwest’s Koufax Christensen (38-3) in the finals. If those names sound familiar, it’s because both wrestlers were runner-ups in 2021. Now, they both have a chance at the state title, but only one with walk away with the win.

7:45 p.m. — First 3A wrestler on to finals

Fort Dodge’s Dru Ayala (42-2) becomes the first Class 3A wrestler to advance to the championship with a tech fall over Johnston’s Caden Leonard at 106.

7:35 — Class 3A semifinals are on deck

And you can't beat the atmosphere in the Wells Fargo Arena.

7:26 p.m. — Lopez to wrestle for spot in title match

If you’re going to watch only one Class 1A semifinal matchup, we have a recommendation.

New London’s Marcel Lopez (53-0) will wrestle Lisbon’s Quincy Happel (42-4) in the semifinals at 126. If Lopez wins this match, he has a spot in the state title bout and he’s one step closer to winning his fourth individual state title.

Carter Fousek in Class 2A is already in the championship match, seeking his fourth title. Robert Avila Jr. has yet to compete in the Class 3A semifinals.

7:15 p.m. — How are 2A's Wrestler of the Year candidates performing?

Cody Goodwin named 17 potential candidates for All-Iowa wrestler of the year ahead of the this week’s state wrestling tournament. Three of those wrestlers compete in Class 2A. So, now that 2A wrestlers are done for the day, let’s take a look at how they’ve fared so far.

Carter Fousek, Crestwood

Senior, 138 pounds

Fousek is headed to the Class 2A title match at 138. He won by 14-6 major decision over Roland Story’s Logan Powers in the semifinal to advance. Fousek is one win away from his fourth individual state wrestling title.

Wyatt Voelker, West Delaware

Senior, 195 pounds

Let’s just say Voelker is doing pretty well. The West Delaware senior is still undefeated, sitting at 43-0 on the season. Voelker won his semifinal bout by tech fall over Webster City’s CJ Hisler, and will face Glenwood’s CJ Carter (51-2) in the championship.

CJ Walrath, Notre Dame-West Burlington

Junior, 182 pounds

Walrath is also riding an undefeated streak…54-0 to be exact. The Burlington wrestler won by 5-1 decision over Dike-New Hartford’s Nick Reinicke. He moves on to the finals match, where Walrath will wrestle Gilbert’s Fernando Villaescusa (38-1).

7:00 p.m. —Three-way race for Class 2A team title

The race for Class 2A team state title is between three teams: Notre Dame-West Burlington, Osage and West Delaware. And a winner might not be decided until Saturday, maybe even Saturday night. Cody Goodwin has all the details.

6:45 p.m. — A pair of Class 2A finals to watch

We have to wait until Saturday for the championship matches, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead. Class 2A will compete first, and there are a couple matches you should try and watch.

First up, at 120 pounds. Webster City’s Cam Phetxoumphone (41-0) and Greene County’s Kale Petersen (12-0) will face of in a battle between two undefeated wrestlers. The question at this point, though, is whether anyone can beat Phetxoumphone this season. We’ll have to wait and see.

Then there’s the 138-pound final. Crestwood-Cresco’s Carter Fousek (21-1) will wrestle South Tama County’s Logan Arp (43-2). Fousek is going for his fourth individual state title, and only Arp stands in his way.

(But, really, this is the championship round. You should try and watch all of them, if you can.)

6:30 p.m. — A chance for a rematch

Greene County’s McKinley Robbins (45-3) and Notre Dame-West Burlington’s Blaine Frazier (52-0) both won their respective semifinal matches and will face each other in Saturday’s Class 2A 132-pound finals.

But this isn’t the first time these two wrestlers have met in the 132-pound championship. Last season, Robbins beat Frazier in the finals for the 2021 state title.

Well, Frazier hasn’t lost since. And now he has a chance to avenge last year’s loss against the same opponent. This should be interesting.

6:15 p.m. — Cheers to 50 years

Let’s give a little shoutout to 50 years of Iowa State athletic trainers volunteering at the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament.

6:00 p.m. — Greene County did...exactly what it thought it would

Apparently Greene County came into the state tournament expecting two wrestlers to advance to the finals…and that’s exactly what happened.

First, Kale Petersen (12-0) advanced at 120 pounds. He’ll have the opportunity to try and knock off two-time defending state champion Cam Phetxoumphone (41-0). No pressure.

With a win over Caleb Olson in the 132 semifinals, McKinley Robbins will have a chance to win back-to-back state titles on Saturday.

Lisbon’s Quincy Happel (42-4) won by 6-4 decision over North Butler-Clarksville’s Tanner Arjes. The four-time qualifier has a daunting opponent in the semifinals: three-time state champ Marcel Lopez.

2:54 p.m. — Three-time state champ Lopez advances

And there we have it: All three wrestlers who have a shot a four individual state titles have made it through to their respective semifinal rounds. Marcel Lopez (53-0) won by tech fall over Nashua-Plainfield’s Kendrick Huck at 126. He’ll compete in the semifinals later on Friday, and Lopez joins Robert Avila (3A) and Carter Fousek (2A) as the wrestlers still vying for that fourth title.

2:50 p.m. — Two undefeated wrestlers advance early

Garrett Rinken (Nashua-Plainfield) and Gable Porter (Underwood) both remain undefeated after their respective Class 1A quarterfinal rounds. Rinken (53-0) pinned Don Bosco’s Andrew Kimball in 3:55 to advance to the semifinals at 120. Porter (44-0) pinned Eagle Grove’s Dustin Dawson in 1:13 at 132.

2:44 p.m. — Morrow beats Neighbor

The Alburnett wrestler Rusty Neighbor (and Cody Goodwin’s first team selection for a hypothetical All-Name squad) dropped his quarterfinal round match to Akron-Westfield’s Cael Morrow. Neighbor moves on to the bloodround with hopes of still being a placewinner.

2:39 p.m. — Morris first to advance to semifinals

Cascade’s Brock Morris (49-4) kicked off 1A quarterfinal action with a pin against North Tama’s Case Monat (33-8) at 106.

2:33 p.m. — Must watch matchup in 1A

First match you’ll want to seriously pay attention to in Class 1A is Marcel Lopez (New London) versus Kendrick Huck (Nashua-Plainfield). Lopez (52-0) is the third wrestler going for a potential fourth individual state title in the 2022 Iowa high school state wrestling tournament. He joins Carter Fousek (2A) and Robert Avila (3A).

Lopez will start the quarterfinal round with a bout against Huck (39-11). If he makes it through that, Lopez will be one match away from that coveted fourth individual state title.

2:30 p.m. — It's time for Class 1A quarterfinals

2:15 p.m. — Avila, more matches to watch in 3A semifinals

With a top-three race between Southeast Polk, Waverly-Shell Rock and Waukee Northwest, the Class 3A semifinals are going to be exciting. Here are a few matches to keep an eye on:

120: Carter Freeman (Waukee Northwest) vs. Logan Trenary (Southeast Polk)

A top three (teams) matchup between two strong wrestlers. Freeman (44-1) pinned Bondurant-Farrar’s Cody Hay to advance to the semifinals at 120. Trenary won by 10-6 decision over North Scott’s Trace Gephart in the quarterfinals. Freeman’s record gives him the advantage, but we all know how Southeast Polk wrestlers have performed so far this tournament.

145: Robert Avila (Iowa City West) vs. Dustin Bohren (Bettendorf)

This one – like Carter Fousek’s 2A semifinal – is a no brainer. Avila (13-1) is one of three wrestlers going for a fourth individual state title in this year’s Iowa high school state wrestling tournament. Fousek has to more rounds to get through before he can take the title, and immediately, it’s Bohren (35-5) who stands in his way.

285: Maddux Borcherding-Johnson (Norwalk) vs. Ben Reiland (Waukee Northwest)

By now, you should know we love a good wrestling match between football recruits. And, in terms of football players who are stellar wrestlers, Borcherding-Johnson and Reiland are top tier. Borcherding-Johnson pinned North Scott’s David Borchers (another high-level football recruit) in 1:20 to advance to the semifinals. Reiland (36-4) defeated Dowling Catholic’s Carson Hagan in sudden victory, handing Hagan his only loss so far this season.

2:00 p.m. — Class 2A semifinals to keep an eye on

Now that Class 2A semifinals are set, here are some matchups you won’t want to miss:

132: Jonathon Burnette (Spirit Lake Park) vs. Blaine Frazier (Notre Dame-West Burlington)

Frazier (51-0) is undefeated this season, and advanced to the semifinals with a win by 11-4 decision over Pocahontas Area’s Tyce Ruffridge. But Burnette (39-3) is coming off an exciting quarterfinal victory, in which he handed Osage’s Anders Kittelson his first loss of the season in an ultimate tie breaker. Wherever there is upset potential, that’s going to be a good bout.

138: Carter Fousek (Crestwood-Cresco) vs. Logan Powers (Roland Story)

This one needs very little explanation. Fousek is two rounds – two matches – away from a possible fourth individual state title. The first of those matches is against Powers in the semifinals. Wrestling fans won’t want to miss an important stepping stone toward Fousek’s state title run.

285: Easton Fleshman (West Lyon) vs. Aaron Graves (Southeast Valley)

Look, we’re all in on the wrestling matches between football players, and Fleshman-Graves should be a good one. Fleshman (45-1) won by 5-0 decision over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Daniel Chavez in the quarterfinals. Graves (28-1) pinned Clarinda’s Logan Green in 3:33 to advance to the semifinals. Plus, we’ve determined that Graves is just a super athlete.

1:35 p.m. — Five undefeated wrestlers on to 3A semis

Six undefeated wrestlers qualified for the Iowa high school state wrestling tournament in Class 3A. By the end of Day 1, all six wrestlers were still undefeated. So, where do they stand after the Class 3A quarterfinals?

Well, there are five undefeated wrestlers in 3A now. Prairie’s Blake Gioimo (42-0) kicked things off for the unbeaten crew with a win by major decision over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Zane Behrends at 113. Then Behrends’ teammate, Ryder Block (36-0), extended his streak with a win by tech fall over Fort Dodge’s Damarion Ross at 138.

Iowa City West’s Hunter Garvin (46-0) won by major decision over Newton’s Brennan Amos at 152. Waverly-Shell Rock has another undefeated wrestler in the semifinals after Aiden Riggins (41-0) won by tech fall over Iowa City West’s Kael Scranton at 160.

Rounding out the undefeated group is Scranton’s teammate Ben Kueter (35-0) who won by tech fall over Urbandale’s Colten Teem at 220.

That leaves one wrestler whose undefeated record didn’t last through to the semifinals. Waukee Northwest’s Ben Reiland (36-4) won in sudeen victory over previously unbeaten Carson Hagan (28-1) at 285. Reiland advanced to the semifinals, while Dowling Catholic’s Hagan fell into the bloodround.

Hagan still secured a medal. He won by an 11-0 major decision over Marshalltown’s Tristan King.

1:10 p.m. — Forest City's Moore on the podium for second time

Forest City’s Kellen Moore (34-3) won by 1-0 decision over Notre Dame-West Burlington’s Tate O’Shea at 138 in the blood round. That guarantees Moore a medal, and that achievement comes with some fun family history.

The Southeast Valley senior won his opening round bout against Creston’s Quinten Fuller to advance to the quarterfinals. Then he scored a game-high 33 points in the Jaguars’ basketball game against Roland Story on Thursday night.

He’s back on the mat Friday, and if he’s tired from the day before, Graves certainly didn’t show it. He’s already on to the semifinals. Graves (28-1) pinned Clarinda’s Logan Green in 3:33 to move on at 285.

Did we mention he’s also Southeast Valley’s kicker for football? Really, we’re wondering if there’s anything Graves can’t do.

9:34 a.m. — Robbins with a buzzer beater in wrestling?

9:30 a.m. — Notre Dame-West Burlington off to hot start

In Class 1A action, a national champion bass fisher (yes, you read that right) inched one step closer to a state wrestling title. Riceville's Lawson Losee recorded an 18-3 technical fall over Beckman Catholic’s Conner Grover at 160 pounds to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.

Eric Kinkaid's bounce-back from a broken leg headlined Class 2A's results on Thursday. The Camanche senior broke his left leg during the football season, but on Day 1 of the tournament, the No. 1 seed at 145 pounds sprinted to a 16-0 technical fall.

Meanwhile, in Class 3A action, sibling duos dominated on Thursday. Dowling Catholic twins Evan and Jacob Frost cruised to Day 1 victories at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively. There were at least six other sets of brothers in 3A who advanced on Thursday.

8:19 a.m. — How many four-time state champions have there been in Iowa?

The Iowa high school wrestling state championships started 95 years ago. Since then, 29 wrestlers have won four state championships, and there could potentially be three more when this season's tournament is all said and done.
