Iowa State's David Carr enters Big 12 wrestling tournament unbeaten, as he seeks another NCAA title

David Carr captured the 157-pound title at the Division I NCAA Championship last season so he entered this season ranked first in his class. He is still No. 1.

Carr, a redshirt junior from Perry High School, is 17-0 overall and 13-0 in dual meets. He has four falls, four major decisions and four technical falls.

Carr was named Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Year after winning the league title and going 20-0 a year ago — Iowa State's first undefeated wrestler since 2011. The previous year, he was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association All-American. He went 18-1 and was seeded third for the NCAA Championships that season, but it was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a freshman, Carr redshirted but posted a 23-1 record wrestling unattached in open tournaments and finished first in four of the five tourneys he competed in.

Carr will defend his Big 12 title on March 5-6 in Tulsa, and will shoot for back-to-back titles in the NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in Detroit.

Paige South (Hoover) The freshman had a big meet as the Niagara women’s swim team captured its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title last weekend in Buffalo. South swam the anchor leg on the 400 freestyle relay which finished first with a 3:28.13 clocking. It broke a meet record that was 13 years old. She also swam on the winning 200 free relay (1:34.04) and with the 200 medley relay which finished fourth (1:45.02). Individually, South finished third in the 50 freestyle (23.79).

Andrew McNally (Lake) The redshirt senior is competing at 174 pounds for the Wisconsin wrestling team (11-1, 9-1 Big Ten duals). The team is ranked fifth, sixth and ninth in the three wrestling polls. McNally has a 7-7 record. He had three pins and two major decisions. The Big Ten Championships are March 5 in Lincoln, Neb.

Zach Schering (Jackson) The Clarion (Pa) freshman has qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships after a big weekend with the men’s swim team at the Rich Sentner Diving Invitational Feb. 5 in New Wilmington, Pa. Schering won the 1-meter dive with a score of 315.85 and was second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 302.75. The NCAA meet is March 9-12 in Greensboro, N.C.

Ben Smith (Hoover) The junior helped the Cleveland State wrestling team post a 27-18 victory over Bloomsburg on Feb. 13. Competing at 197 pounds, he won his match with a 19-7 major decision. Smith has a 16-4 overall record, a 13-3 dual meet record and is 9-0 in Mid-American Conference matches. He has two falls, a technical fall and four major decisions. Smith and the Vikings will compete in the MAC Championships, March 4-5, in Athens.

Joe McAuliffe (Jackson) The sophomore ran a leg on the Allegheny (Pa) 1,600-meter relay, which won in a time of 3:35.79 at Baldwin-Wallace’s Mid-Feb meet. McAuliffe also finished seventh out of 29 in the 800 with a time of 2:08.30. On Feb. 4 at Oberlin’s Dan Kinsey Invitational, he finished second in the mile with a personal-best 4:51.28 and was fourth in the 800 in 2:09.13. His personal record in the 800 is 2:04.88, which he recorded outdoors last April.

Tye Hunt (Lake) The Youngstown State junior won the long jump at the Grand Valley State Big Meet lin Allendale, Mich. He posted a leap of 24 feet, 7 inches which is a personal record. He has two firsts, two seconds and a fourth in that event this winter. Hunt also finished sixth in the 60 in 6.86. That tied his personal record which he recorded when he finished fifth in the Icebreaker Meet on Dec. 3 in Youngstown.

Tamia Ridley (Massillon) The Notre Dame College senior is the top rebounder in the Mountain East Conference. The 5-foot-10 forward is averaging 12.7 rebounds a game. She is also averaging 9.3 points for the Falcons. Ridley grabbed 17 rebounds twice in recent games and entered last week with 10 double-doubles, including 14 points and 17 rebounds in a 71-64 home win over Fairmont State on Feb. 9.

Marissa Berlin (Green) The 6-3 sophomore continues to average in double figures in both scoring (12.3) and rebounding (10.2) for the Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) women’s basketball team. Berlin had seven double-doubles in the first 23 games, including 20 points and 22 rebounds in a 76-57 non-league win over Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 13.
