Iran boxer in exile calls for digital revolution

STORY: Khadem became the first Iranian woman to contest an official boxing match three years ago in France and was hoping to lead the way in the Islamic Republic. However, she cancelled her return home after an arrest warrant was issued against her.

The 27-year-old has since settled in western France, launching her own clothing brand and taking up business studies.

Khadem said she has been following the controversy surrounding Rekabi, who has reiterated comments to state media that she climbed without a hijab unintentionally.

"I’ve spoken about a digital revolution, and the need to share information online. Two days ago, however, my bank account was hacked. I don’t know why. It could just be a case of online hacking, but this has never happened to me before," Khadem told Reuters.

She added that high-level female athletes in Iran are always stressed.

"I remember my first fight, I wasn’t even thinking about the fight, all that I was afraid of, was coming home. What’s waiting for me? What’s going to happen to me?"
