Iran Uses Mock-Up of Aircraft Carrier as Target in Gulf Drill

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard used a replica of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier as a target during military drills in the Strait of Hormuz, state media said on July 28.

The drill came days after Iran moved the mock aircraft carrier to the strait, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil travels.

Military video released by IRIB News carries a July 27 date stamp.

“We cannot speak to what Iran hopes to gain by building this mock-up, or what tactical value they would hope to gain by using such a mock-up in a training or offensive exercise scenario,” the spokeswoman for the US Navy’s Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet, Cmdr Rebecca Rebarich, told the AP.

“We remain confident in our naval forces’ ability to defend themselves against any maritime threat,” Rebarich said. Credit: IRIB News via Storyful
