Iranians defy protest ultimatum despite crackdown

STORY: The video appeared to show a group of men, some armed with batons or bars and some waving Iranian flags, facing off a group of protesters. One of the men then draws a device from a bag and fires it in the direction of the rival group. A smoking canister is then thrown back and forth between the two groups.

Reuters was able to verify the building shown in the video to be part of the University of North Tehran's campus through matching it with third-party and satellite imagery. Reuters was not able to verify the date this video was filmed.

Another video obtained by Reuters showed students at a university in Sadra defying a warning to halt their protests. The location of the videos was verified by building characteristics which matched file imagery.

Iranians from all walks of life have been protesting since 22-year-old Mahsa Amini's death on September 16, after she was arrested by the morality police for attire deemed inappropriate.

The top commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned protesters that Saturday (October 29) would be their last day of taking to the streets, the harshest warning yet by Iranian authorities.
