Raucous applause followed the announcement on January 24 that the Irish-language film An Cailin Ciuin (which means ‘The Quiet Girl’) would be a contender to win the 2022 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

Video shared by Break Out Pictures on Twitter shows the cast and crew behind the film reacting to the live Oscar nomination announcement at The Stella Cinema Rathmines in Dublin. It would be the first time an Irish-language film was nominated for the international category.

“Hard to believe today is the day. Only feels like yesterday when we first saw it in the middle of Covid and fell in love with it and it’s out in the world with an #OscarNomination,” the film company said.

Ireland boasted a total of fourteen 2022 Oscar nominations. Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin was nominated nine times, a new record for the most nominations for an Irish film, previously held by Belfast and In the Name of the Father, the Irish Times reported.
