‘The Irishman’ Plows Ahead, Leading the Critics’ Choice Awards With 14 Nominations

It was a good week for Netflix’s “The Irishman,” which notched big wins with the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics as well as 14 Critics’ Choice nods. “The Irishman” leads all films this year with 14 nominations including Best Picture, Robert De Niro for Best Actor, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for Best Supporting Actor, Martin Scorsese for Best Director, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Sony) followed with 12 nominations, followed by “Little Women” (also Sony) with nine, “1917” (Universal) and “Marriage Story” (Netflix) with eight, and “Jojo Rabbit” (Fox Searchlight), “Joker” (Warner Bros.), and “Parasite” (Neon) with seven each. Notably, “Jojo Rabbit” landed three supporting acting nominations, for Scarlett Johansson plus Thomasin McKenzie and Roman Griffin Davis in the Best Young Actor/Actress Category.

Bong Joon Ho’s Korean Oscar entry “Parasite” (Neon) followed in the footsteps of last year’s “Roma,” scoring nominations beyond foreign-language film, including Best Picture, Acting Ensemble, Director, Original Screenplay, Production Design, and Editing.

The annual Critics’ Choice Awards are voted on by the Critics Choice Association voters for film, television and documentaries. Because it’s the largest film critics organization in North America (400 television, radio, and online critics), the Critics’ Choice Awards are often the most accurate predictor of Academy Award nominations. The documentary awards were announced on November 10, 2019. The film and TV winners will be revealed at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala broadcast live on The CW Network on Sunday, January, 2019.

Netflix has earned 61 nominations across their series and films. HBO received 33 nominations, followed by Amazon with 14, and NBC with 12. Topping the list of nominated series is “When They See Us” (Netflix) with six, followed by “This Is Us” (NBC) and “Schitt’s Creek” (Pop) with five each. Several programs received a total of four nominations including “Barry” (HBO), “Chernobyl” (HBO), “Fleabag” (Amazon), “Fosse/Verdon” (FX), “Game of Thrones” (HBO), “The Crown” (Netflix), “The Good Fight” (CBS All Access), “Unbelievable” (Netflix), and “Watchmen” (HBO). With the SAG nominations voting closing at 5PM on Sunday, December 8, three days after the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics’ Choice nominations won’t have much impact on the SAG Awards, but could push the titles that keep landing nods across multiple critics groups to the top of screener piles. And the January 12 Critics’ Choice Awards show falls five days after Oscar ballots are due.

Given the Critics Choice comedy and action categories — as well as two extra slots for each category — several nominees are up for multiple awards, such as comedy contenders “Knives Out” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and action nominees “Ford v Ferrari” and “1917.”

Several actors landed multiple nominations across both film and television. Laura Dern could take home two trophies for her work in both HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and “Marriage Story,” while Scarlett Johansson scored nominations for her roles in both “Jojo Rabbit” and “Marriage Story.” Newcomer Asante Blackk also received two nominations for his roles in “This Is Us” and “When They See Us.”

Many of this year’s director nominees pulled double duty, and are nominated for their screenplays as well, including Noah Baumbach for “Marriage Story,” Greta Gerwig for “Little Women,” Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” and Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

Not making the Best Picture cut was “Bombshell,” although Charlize Theron landed an Actress nod. Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” had to settle for Supporting Actor Tom Hanks and an Adapted Screenplay slot. “Ford v Ferrari,” which had been overlooked by critics groups and the AFI Top Ten Films, did rank among the top 10 nominees at Critics’ Choice. In the Actress race, Alfre Woodard was a notable no-show for Neon’s late-year release “Clemency.”

With seven nominations for Best Director, the question is who gets left out at Oscar time: the Safdie brothers follow their NYFCC directing win with four “Uncut Gems” nominations including Director, Best Picture, Editing, and Best Actor Adam Sandler; these nods give them a huge boost with Academy voters. A comparison might be Damien Chazelle’s breakout movie “Whiplash,” which wound up with five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Gerwig also gets a notable push for “Little Women,” competing with her partner Baumbach for Best Director and Picture. Lulu Wang did not get a director slot, nor did “The Farewell” wind up in the 10 nominations for Best Picture, although the film landed slots for Best Comedy, Actress Awkwafina, Supporting Actress Zhao Shuzhen and Original Screenplay.
