ABERDEEN, MD — There will be Fourth of July fireworks this year in Harford County, according to the Aberdeen IronBirds. The organization will be hosting a drive-in celebration.
The show will take place in the parking lot at Ripken Stadium, after a collaborative effort among local and state officials and stadium representatives and thanks to business sponsors.
People are advised not to arrive earlier than 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, and to point their vehicles toward Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium. There is no tailgating before the show, and there will be no restrooms. Attendees are advised to stay in their vehicles.
"If you must leave your car, please observe social distancing and when possible, face coverings or masks are encouraged," organizers say.
The fireworks show at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium will begin at 8:30 p.m. and be simulcast on WAMD. When listeners tune in to 970 AM, they will hear instructions, music and a countdown to the fireworks show.
"We are trying to encourage people to arrive for the show, enjoy some phenomenal fireworks, and travel home safely," IronBirds General Manager Jack Graham said. "Any semblance of normalcy and celebration will be a relief during what has been a difficult time across the country."
Minor League Baseball on Tuesday announced the 2020 season would be canceled.
Fireworks Extravaganza, the company that traditionally provides fireworks for the Aberdeen IronBirds, will be handling the July 4 display.
The Aberdeen Police Department will oversee traffic control.
Maryland State Delegate Mike Griffith, Aberdeen Mayor Patrick McGrady, Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Trabert, Harford County Council President Pat Vincenti and the Harford County Health Department were vital in planning the event, according to a statement from organizers.
Sponsors include Klein’s ShopRite, Bay State Land Services, BCV Commercial Realty and Shaffer, McLauchlin & Stover.
"The way that every different party and authority around Harford County have rallied together has been truly inspirational," Graham said.
The fireworks show at Ripken Stadium will be at 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Leidos Field, 873 Long Dr, Aberdeen, MD 21001.
