Two killed in Irondequoit house fire identified

UPDATE (Aug. 26, 2022): Irondequoit police on Friday afternoon identified the two people killed in a house fire in Irondequoit earlier this week.

Irondequoit Police Chief Alan Laird said that Phyllis Keller, 74, who was pronounced died at the scene of the blaze at 56 Garford Road. David Keller, also 74, died on Thursday at an area hospital after firefighters rescued him from the home where the pair lived.

Police did not say how the Kellers were related.

Fire officials continue to investigate the fatal fire, to determine the cause. Laird said the fire was not intentionally set.

ORIGINAL STORY (Aug. 25, 2022): Firefighters are investigating a house fire that killed one person and seriously injured a second at a Garford Road residence in Irondequoit.

The blaze, which sparked around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, took firefighters from five departments about 30 minutes to control, said Kyle Viccaro, assistant chief of the Point Pleasant Fire Department. Heavy flames were rising from the house, a small Cape Cod-style, single-family home as emergency responders arrived at the scene, he said.

One person was rescued from a bedroom in the home and was taken to Rochester General Hospital with significant injuries that are considered life-threatening, Viccaro said.

A second person was removed from the bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Authorities did not identify the two victims.

Fire officials are investigating, to determine what caused the fire, Viccaro said. The house sustained heavy fire damage and is not livable.

Garford Road is a residential road that runs between Culver Road and Sea Breeze Drive.

Firefighters from Irondequoit, St. Paul Boulevard, Sea Breeze and West Webster fire departments assisted at the scene.
