FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A political science professor at Fresno State says it is ironic that an attempt to recall Governor Gavin Newsom over mismanagement of money will end up costing the state money to resolve.

On Monday, a group known as “Rescue California” formally served the governor’s office with the intent to oust him. The group cites concerns over the state’s multi-billion dollar deficit as well as a new law that offers health care to undocumented Californians.

Gavin Newsom faces new recall effort from conservative activists

“It’s ironic, someone trying to mount a recall based on the governor’s mismanagement of money, are themselves forcing the state to basically spend money it shouldn’t be spending,” said Political Science Professor Thomas Holyoke. “I think what may be happening here is that someone is trying to discredit him now to make him appear as a less viable candidate.”

A similar recall effort in 2021 failed to remove Gavin Newsom as governor. The move ultimately cost California taxpayers around $200 million. Almost 62% of the votes cast were against that recall effort.

“It will be interesting to see how seriously republican groups in California take this,” said Holyoke.
