Ever dreamed of competing in a triathalon? It’s time to begin training.

Richland will join more than 150 communities worldwide to host an Ironman 70.3 triathalon in 2024.

The running-swimming-biking event will occur Sept. 22, 2024, and will be centered around Columbia Point. Registration opens Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at ironman.com/im703-washington-tri-cities.

The triathalon will include a swimming event in the Columbia River, a footrace along the Richland waterfront and a bicycle route through Richland and West Richland.

Visit Tri-Cities anticipates 2,500 participants plus 7,500 additional visitors, including support staff and family members.

It will result in up to $8 million in visitor spending, Visit Tri-Cities said.

The 70.3 series is part of a portfolio of events organized by The Ironman Group, which organizes triathalons and other events around the world.

Its 2024 schedule for 70.3 events includes several dozen in the U.S.

The current lineup includes West Coast stops in Oceanside, Calif. (April 6), St. George, Utah (May 4), Morrow Bay, Calif. (May 19), Boulder, Colo. (June 8), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (June 23), Salem, Ore. (July 21) and Maple Valley, Wash. (TBD).
