IRS in Detroit to offer taxpayers help without an appointment: 4 days you can walk in

Taxpayers who are facing a holdup with an old tax refund, troubles with ID theft or finding it tough to get other tax woes resolved will be able to walk in — no appointment necessary — to talk with someone from the Internal Revenue Service on Saturday.

The IRS has special Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 11 at its Detroit Taxpayer Assistance Center at 477 Michigan Ave.

Face-to-face Saturday help is being offered Feb. 11 during those same hours at a wide range of IRS taxpayer centers across the country, including in Atlanta, Phoenix, Miami, Chicago, Nashville, Boston, Philadelphia and Las Vegas. IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service employees may also be available to help with some issues.

Three other Saturdays — one in March, another in April and another in May — are being set aside for special Saturday hours at select IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country.

On March 11, the Detroit office is scheduled to have Saturday hours again from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On April 8, two IRS taxpayer centers in Michigan are scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — the Detroit office on Michigan Avenue and the Flint office at 917 N. Saginaw St.

On May 13, the Detroit office is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Normally, such centers are only open weekdays from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. and you'd need to make an appointment to visit during the week. To make an appointment at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, you can call 844-545-5640.

The IRS is not offering help preparing your tax returns. But taxpayers might request help for snags involving refunds, ID theft, and other concerns. Payments can be made by check or money order, not cash.

Taxpayers also can ask for help setting up an Online Account and getting an Identity Protection PIN.

"One of the main issues that people will likely be coming in for is ID verification for victims of ID theft," said IRS spokesperson Luis Garcia.

Others may want to address issues involving a missing refund. Typically, of course, refund information will generally be available within 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of an electronically filed return on the Where's My Refund? ‎tool on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go Mobile App.

But everyone isn't finding answers online.

"While the vast majority of people can track their refund easily on IRS.gov, there are some that may be coming in to find out what specifically is holding up their refund," Garcia said.

ID theft-related cases can involve cases where crooks use stolen ID information and attempt to file fake returns to steal tax refund money. Sometimes, there's fraud involved; other times the IRS is delaying the process to prevent suspected fraud.

When the IRS spots a suspicious tax return that has your name and Social Security number, the IRS will send you a notice or a letter.

Suspected ID theft cases have delayed some 2021 refunds. The IRS website has stated that extenuating circumstances caused by the pandemic drove up identity theft inventories at the IRS. On average, the IRS stated, it is taking about 360 days at some points to resolve identity theft cases.

As part of the process, taxpayers ultimately must verify their identity and often must call a toll-free number provided in the IRS letter. If they are unable to verify their identity with a customer service representative on the phone, they may be asked to visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in person. Taxpayers in these situations need a picture ID plus the Letter 4883C that was sent by the IRS and a copy of the affected tax return if the taxpayer filed one.

If you go take advantage of walk-in Saturday help hours, bring necessary paperwork, including:

  • Current government-issued photo identification.

  • Social Security cards and/or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers for all members of their household.

  • Any IRS letters or notices received and requested documents.

  • A current mailing address.

  • An email address.

  • Bank account information, to receive payments or refunds by direct deposit.

If you are looking for free help preparing a 2022 tax return, other services are available to those who qualify, such as through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites. Taxpayers can use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887.

To find an AARP Tax-Aide site, use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669.

The tax filing deadline for 2022 returns is April 18.
