Former Rutgers football star Isiah Pacheco made his NFL debut over the weekend for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a strong performance that certainly puts the seventh-round pick in a prime position to not just make the Chiefs roster but factor into the offense this season.

Saturday’s 19-14 loss at the Chicago Bears produced several talking points for the AFC West team. But fans of the Chiefs and the team’s beat reporters seemed very much focused on the play of Pacheco.

Following a very strong first two weeks of training camp, Pacheco didn’t disappoint in his first NFL action. He showed a few flashes of the form that made him a standout at Rutgers.

“It felt great to be in the first preseason game. [As] a kid, just waiting all his life to be in an NFL game to actually play in one for my first time ever going to an NFL game,” Pacheco told reporters on Monday.

“To be in it felt great and that’s what I always had the mindset to do. And it was a dream come true and I finally did it.”

In terms of his output, it was solid considering the former Big Ten running back was running with the first-team offense for much of his time in the game. Pacheco had two carries for six yards and a catch for five yards along with a 37-yard kickoff return.

Over the last two years at Rutgers, Pacheco certainly put together some solid numbers but he didn’t exactly stand out given the rebuilding nature of the offense.

On Monday, Pacheco credited Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano for helping to prepare him for the next step in his career and the chance to make an NFL team.

When asked about the speed of play, Pacheco didn’t seem fazed.

“Technically it really didn’t; I don’t know why but I just felt like it didn’t,” Pacheco said.

“I felt like I was more confident in the scheme. Knowing who I had on which play and being able to execute at a fast pace was something I worked on out here at practice for in a game and it came a little more easier.”
