Islamic Center of Charlotte hosts Ramadan open house

Over the weekend, the Islamic Center of Charlotte hosted its annual Ramadan open house.

During April, Muslims across the globe fast from dusk to dawn until April 21. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.

In the Queen City, a group gathers for ‘iftar, or to break their fast, at the open house. Doors at the event were open to everyone, even those who don’t practice Islam.

Folami Xavier was at the event and told Channel 9 it was a great way for people to answer questions about a community surrounded by assumptions.

“I think it’s great, so that way any questions people have—I know in this country, unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions about different religions, so I think this is a great way to dispel a lot of those myths,” Xavier said.

The holiday of Ramadan honors the month when the Prophet Mohammed stayed in a cave north of Mecca for spiritual contemplation.
