Islanders Jump to the Top

There is a new leader in this week’s Power Rankings as the New York Islanders, based on their 13-0-1 run in their last 14 games, are at the top of the standings, just ahead of divisional rival Washington.

The Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers and Arizona Coyotes made major moves up the rankings while Nashville and Vancouver tumbled downwards.

1. New York Islanders

Record: 14-3-1 (2-0-0)

(Last Week -2)

New York won both this week and are 13-0-1 in their last 14. The Islanders defeated Toronto and then came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Flyers in a shootout. They face Pittsburgh in a home-and-home series and then travel to San Jose to start a California swing before Thanksgiving. New York has played only six of their 18 games on the road but are 5-1-0 away from the Island.

2. Washington

Record: 15-3-4 (2-1-1)

The Capitals won twice this week, defeating Philadelphia and Boston in shootouts. They lost to Arizona in a shootout and lost to Montreal outright. This week they take on Anaheim, the New York Rangers and Vancouver. Washington has played 10 home games and 12 on the road and are 10-1-1 on visiting ice.

3. Boston 

Record: 12-3-5 (1-0-2)

The Bruins lost a couple of shootouts to Florida and Washington and handled the Maple Leafs pretty easily. This week Boston takes on New Jersey on the road and then play Buffalo and Minnesota at home. Boston is 7-0-4 at home and 5-3-1 on the road.

4. St. Louis

Record: 12-4-5 (0-1-2)

The Blues finally ran into some difficulty as they lost all three games, once in a shootout to Arizona, another in overtime to Columbus and were handed a 4-1 loss by Anaheim in St. Louis. The Blues take on Tampa Bay, Calgary and Nashville at home this week. St. Louis has been great on the road at 7-2-2 while they are 5-2-3 at home. 

5. Edmonton

Record: 13-6-3 (1-1-1)

The Oilers started the week losing to San Jose, but beat Colorado at home before losing in overtime to the Stars. They face San Jose, Los Angeles, Vegas and Arizona on the road this week. Connor McDavid had 10 points in three games this past week. Edmonton has been strong at home with a 7-2-2 mark and have been better than okay on the road at 6-4-1.

6. Colorado

Record: 12-6-2 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -6)

The Avalanche won two-of-three this week as they picked up wins over Winnipeg and Vancouver while losing to the Oilers. The Avs play in Calgary and Minnesota before returning home to play Toronto. The Avs have played only nine home games and are 6-2-1 while they are 6-4-1 on the road.

7. Carolina

Record:12-7-1 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -10)

After losing all three last week, the Hurricanes turned it around this week and beat Ottawa, Buffalo and Minnesota. They play four games as they are in Chicago and Detroit while at home to Philadelphia and Florida. Carolina is 7-3-0 in the friendly confines while that are 5-4-1 on the road.

8. Montreal

Record: 11-5-4 (2-0-1)

The Canadiens defeated Columbus in a shootout, won outright in Washington and then dropped an overtime decision to New Jersey. Montreal plays in Columbus this week and then are home to Ottawa and the New York Rangers. Montreal has played well both at home and on the road as they are 6-3-1 at the Bell Centre and 5-2-3 on the road.

9. Pittsburgh

Record: 11-7-2 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -8)

The Penguins lost in overtime to the Rangers, lost in regulation to New Jersey and then returned home to wallop Toronto. Pittsburgh will play the Islanders in a home-and-home series and then take on the Devils again for the second time in a week. The Penguins have been solid at home with a 7-3-1 mark and are even away from home with a 4-4-1 record.

10. Winnipeg

Record: 12-8-1 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -15)

The Jets lost by a 4-0 count to Colorado to begin the week and then defeated Florida and Tampa Bay in the Sunshine State. The Jets finish their road trip this week with games in Nashville and Dallas before coming home to play Columbus. The Jets have been terrific away from home with a 7-3-0 mark but are only 5-5-1 at home.

11. Florida

Record: 10-5-5 (2-1-0)

The Panthers lost to Winnipeg but sandwiched wins over Boston and the New York Rangers around the defeat. The Panthers play Philadelphia, Anaheim and Carolina this week. The Panthers are 4-2-2 at home and 6-3-3 on the road.

12. Arizona

Record: 12-7-2 (3-1-0)     

(Last Week -18)

The Coyotes started the week with a couple of shootout wins over the last two Stanley Cup champions, Washington and St. Louis and then lost in Minnesota before returning home to beat Calgary. The Coyotes play four games again this week as they lost Los Angeles, Toronto and Edmonton with a game against the Kings in Los Angeles mixed in as well. The Coyotes are 7-3-2 away from Glendale and 5-4-0 at home.

13. Tampa Bay

Record: 9-6-2 (1-1-0)

(Last Week -14)

The Lightning beat the Rangers to give them a three-game winning streak but lost to the Jets at home to end the week. They take on St. Louis, Chicago and Anaheim this week. Tampa Bay has played the least amount of games in the NHL at 17 and are 4-2-1 at home which includes a game in Sweden, and 5-4-1 on the road.

14. Vegas

Record: 10-9-3 (1-2-0)

(Last Week -11)

The Golden Knights lost to Chicago and Los Angeles but broke out in a big way with a 6-0 win over Calgary to end the week. The Golden Knights are home for all three games this week as they play Toronto, San Jose and Edmonton. Vegas is 5-4-2 at home, a vast change from the last two seasons, while that are 5-5-1 on the road.  

15. Buffalo 

Record: 10-7-3 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -12)

The Sabres split the week, going 1-1-1 as they lost in overtime to Carolina, defeated Ottawa and lost to Chicago. This week Buffalo plays Minnesota, Boston and Florida. The Sabres are 6-2-2 at home and 4-5-1 on the road.

16. Philadelphia 

Record: 10-6-4 (0-1-2)

(Last Week -13)

The Flyers lost all three but fortunately for them, two were via the shootout as Washington and the New York Islanders beat them in extra time. They dropped a 2-1 decision to Ottawa. Philadelphia takes on Florida, Carolina and Calgary this week. The Flyers have been great at home with a 6-1-3 record while they are 4-5-1 on enemy ice.

17. Vancouver

Record:10-7-4 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -9)

The Canucks defeated Nashville, lost to Dallas and then fell to Colorado in overtime as they completed a four-game homestand. Vancouver faces Dallas, Nashville and Washington on the road this week. The Canucks are 5-2-3 at home and 5-5-5-1 on the road.

18. Dallas

Record: 11-8-2 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -22)

The Stars beat Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton in a successful Western Canada tour. Dallas gets Vancouver back in the Lone Star State this week as well as having Winnipeg and Chicago come to visit. Dallas is 6-5-1 on the road and 5-3-1 at home.

19. Nashville

Record: 9-7-3 (0-2-0)

(Last Week -7)

The Predators lost both games this week to tumble down the rankings. They lost to Vancouver and Chicago and gave up 12 goals in the process. Nashville will play Winnipeg, Vancouver and St. Louis this week. The Predators are 3-4-1 on the road and 6-3-2 at home.

20. Calgary

Record: 10-10-3 (0-3-0)

(Last Week -16)

The Flames lost all three games this week as Dallas, Arizona and Vegas were all victorious. The Flames are reeling and hope that they can break loose against Colorado, St. Louis and Philadelphia.  Calgary has played a league-high 13 road games (along with Minnesota) and are 4-8-1 while they are a much better 6-2-2 at home.

21. Anaheim 

Record:10-9-2 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -21)

The Ducks lost to Detroit in overtime, to San Jose in regulation and then upset the St. Louis Blues. This week they head out on the road and play in Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay. Anaheim has a 6-4-2 record at home and are 4-5-0 away from the Pond.

22. Chicago

Record: 9-7-4 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -25)

The Blackhawks won all three this week and are on a four-game winning streak. They beat Vegas and then trampled over Nashville and Buffalo. Chicago takes on Carolina, Tampa Bay and Dallas this week. The Blackhawks have been good at home with a 6-3-2 record and are 3-4-2 away from home.

23. San Jose

Record: 10-10-1 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -26)

The Sharks were a perfect 3-0 this week, the second week in a row they did so and are back to .500 after a 4-10-1 start.  The Sharks defeated Edmonton, Anaheim and Detroit this past week. San Jose faces Edmonton and the New York Islanders this week with a game in Vegas in between.  The Sharks are 7-4-0 at the Tank while they are 3-6-1 on the road.

24. New York Rangers

Record: 8-8-2 (1-2-0)

(Last Week -23)

The Rangers got off on the right foot this week as they knocked off Pittsburgh but losses to Tampa Bay and Florida ruined the week. This week New York plays Washington, Ottawa and Montreal. The Rangers are 5-4-2 at Madison Square Garden and 3-4-0 on the road.

25. Toronto

Record: 9-9-4 (0-3-0)

The Maple Leafs are dropping like a stone as they lost all three games this week, losing to the New York Islanders, Boston and Pittsburgh. They continue their road trip this week, facing Vegas Arizona and Colorado where they are 3-6-0 away from the ScotiaBank Arena. The Leafs are 6-3-4 at home.

26. Columbus

Record: 7-8-4 (1-0-1)

(Last Week -24)

The Blue Jackets lost in a shootout to Montreal before beating the Blues at home by a 3-2 score. They are home to Montreal and Detroit this week and visit Winnipeg to end the seven days. Columbus is 3-3-3 on the road while they are 4-5-1 on the road.

27. New Jersey 

Record: 7-8-4 (2-1-0)

(Last Week -27)

The Devils lost to Ottawa and defeated Pittsburgh and Montreal to end the week on a good note. New Jersey plays Boston, Pittsburgh and Detroit this week. The Devils are 3-3-4 at home and 4-5-0 on the road.

28. Ottawa 

Record:8-11-1 (2-2-0)

(Last Week -29)

The Senators lost to Carolina and Buffalo this week but defeated New Jersey and Philadelphia to split the week. Ottawa plays in Detroit and Montreal this week as well as coming home to face the New York Rangers. The Senators play well at home, the sign of a young squad, as they are 6-4-0 but are 2-7-1 on the road.

29. Detroit

Record: 7-12-3 (1-0-2)

(Last Week -30) 

The Red Wings beat Anaheim to finish a three-game winning streak and then lost a couple of games in extra time as Los Angeles beat them in overtime while San Jose was forced to go to a shootout before prevailing. The Red Wings play four games this week including on the road versus Columbus and New Jersey as well as home games against Ottawa and Carolina. The Red Wings are 3-7-2 on the road and 4-5-1 at home.

30. Los Angeles 

Record:8-11-1 (3-0-0)

(Last Week -31)

The Kings were perfect this week after losing seven in a row although there was one overtime loss in that span. They beat Minnesota, Detroit and Vegas with all three wins coming at home. This week the Kings take on Arizona in a pair of games, as well as Edmonton. The Kings have been good at the Staples Center with a 6-4-0 mark but are only 2-7-1 on the road.

31. Minnesota

Record:7-11-2 (1-1-1)

(Last Week -28)

The Wild beat Arizona for their only win of the week, as well as losing to Carolina in overtime and dropping a 3-1 decision to Los Angeles. Minnesota is in Buffalo and Boston this week, sandwiching a home game against Colorado. Minnesota is a horrible 3-10-0 on the road and 4-1-2 at home.
