ISP investigating inmate death

Nov. 2—VERSAILLES — Wednesday, Nov. 1, Indiana State Police detectives began conducting a death investigation after an inmate being held in the Ripley County Jail died while incarcerated in the facility.

According to information provided by the ISP, the investigation indicated that at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday a 57-year-old female inmate arrived at the facility after having been arrested in a different Indiana county on a Ripley County warrant.

Shortly after arriving at the Ripley County Jail, the inmate became unresponsive while inside of a jail cell.

Jail staff and responding medical personnel provided medical care to the individual and she was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville where she was soon pronounced deceased.

In keeping with established protocol, the Ripley County Sheriff's Department requested the Indiana State Police to investigate the death.

The investigation is ongoing.

Toxicology results and an autopsy are pending although no foul play is suspected at this time.
