Israel fires rockets at 'Iranian targets' in Syria

These lights in the sky are air defenses around Damascus thwarting Israeli rockets, according to Syrian state media.

It reported two civilians were killed and several wounded in the attacks late Wednesday (November 20).

But said most Israeli missiles were destroyed before landing.

But the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 people were killed, seven of them non-Syrian.

Israel said its aircraft struck dozens of Iranian and Syrian targets in Syria in retaliation for rockets fired at it the day before, which it shot down.

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee:

"The targets that were targeted included many things, such as weapons inventory military bases, command and control systems, watch towers and other targets. The Israeli Defence forces consider the Syrian regime responsible for what is happening on its lands, or whatever comes out of it, and we warn them against operating or allowing operations against Israel from inside Syrian lands."

He said some of those targets belonged to Iran's Al Quds force -- that's the overseas arm of the country's Revolutionary Guard.

Israel says it has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria against Iranian targets trying to establish a permanent military presence there and against advanced weapons shipments to Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah.
