Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani say their scenes in Netflix's "The Lovebirds" were so funny to shoot, they regularly struggled to keep a straight face. So much so that Nanjiani says he genuinely felt guilt for blowing up a scene. (May 20)
[MUSIC - FOREIGNER, "I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS"]
Looks like love has finally found me.
- I love you.
KUMAIL NANJIANI: There was a lot of laughing during all that stuff. And I remember there were moments where I just felt so bad because Issa was being so funny and I would keep laughing and ruining the takes. And I was like, just, just go again. I swear I can get it.
I swear I can get it. 'Cause, you know, that moment when something is really, really funny, you really want to get it right then, when like-- what's making you laugh, you want to get it in that moment. But so I certainly felt guilty sometimes where I was just like-- and, you know, when you get in that mode of laughing, it's very hard to get out of it.
ISSA RAE: So hard.
- He's dead!
- We know he's dead, but we didn't kill him.
- 'Cause I took part in a murder or whatever.
- We didn't murder anybody!
ISSA RAE: We definitely got to improvise a lot. Mike Showalter, who directed it, was really, really keen on that. He just encouraged us to play. And it was so much fun. I think those moments, like the milkshake moment and other things-- I want to say the milkshake moment, was that off the cuff or was that scripted?
KUMAIL NANJIANI: It was scripted. Yeah, we-- but within it, we improvised. But the idea of it was in the script.
ISSA RAE: Yeah, so it was just-- it was fun to go back and forth. And it was encouraged. And I broke a lot.
- That's me covering up my body cam so I can beat your ass.
ISSA RAE: You know, we're making due. And we're-- I'm very, very grateful. You know, Mail and I are both grateful to Netflix for picking it up. Because, obviously, there's so much competition and so many other movies facing the same fate, you know, of just like we're trying to fit back in on the schedule.
And, you know, it was going to be very competitive to try to find a new date. And so to be able to premiere during this time with kind of maximum eyeballs is absolutely ideal. And we're going to find-- I know I'm trying to find a way to celebrate it and make it just as good as a celebratory point.
KUMAIL NANJIANI: We've already put it in order for a lot of food. So we're going to eat a bunch. And we're getting some pies, just family and I. And we're just going to have like sort of a nice celebration weekend.
We're just going to do the best we can. Obviously, it would be nice to have a big party. But that's not going to happen right now. So we'll just have a good time hanging out in the house and eating a lot.
- Those people are super dangerous and they're really powerful.
- This is some "Handmaid's Tale" bullshit.
- We have imposters.
- Oh no, imposters, that sucks.
- Everyone unmask yourselves.
- Oh shit. Nobody else took their masks off.
