Issaquah SD’s Sunset Elementary closed Monday, Tuesday due to COVID cases, staffing shortage
In a letter to students’ families on Friday, the principal of Sunset Elementary School in Bellevue, part of the Issaquah School District, announced that the school is closed Monday and Tuesday due to a staffing shortage amid rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.
“This decision came after considerable effort on our part to secure enough staff to offer school,” Principal LeAnn Tuupo said in the letter.
“As many of you are likely aware, we have had rising COVID-19 cases, and a number of clusters in our classes. Even with our wonderful substitute teachers and substitute classified staff members, we do not anticipate having enough staff to hold school on Monday and Tuesday at our building.”
It is unclear how many students and staff at the school have tested positive for COVID-19.
King County has seen about an 8% increase in new COVID cases in the past week.
Tuupo said the school hopes the situation will improve enough to hold in-person classes on Wednesday, and noted that health officials “highly recommend masking for all students and staff” as a way to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
