Italian Coast Guard Works to Rescue Sperm Whale Tangled in Fishing Net
The Italian Coast Guard was working to free a sperm whale entangled in a fishing net off the coast of the Aeolian Islands on Italy’s west coast on July 19.
This footage shows a diver using a knife to cut pink netting which completely covered the whale.
The coast guard said on Facebook that the whale was first reported by boaters who spotted it in difficulty on July 18.
Coast guard teams monitored the animal overnight and biologists joined the operation to free the whale on July 19.
