New Italian eatery opens in Penfield, serving specialty pizza, homemade desserts and deli delights

Capone's Italian Eatery has opened in Penfield.

The restaurant, located at 1811 Penfield Road, serves specialty pizza, cold and hot subs, pasta, salads and homemade Italian desserts, including carrot cake and cheesecake.

The 1,100-square-foot business is part pizzeria and Italian eatery and part deli, said owner Bryan Dezio, a Penfield native who now lives in Wayne County. It's also a nod to Dezio's father - Greg Dezio - who died in December and always wanted to operate a pizzeria or sandwich shop.

"It was his dream," Bryan Dezio said of his father, 64, who "loved to cook and everything about food."

In addition to prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner, Capone's will offer deli meats by the pound and cold sides such as antipasti and macaroni salad.

"We have a darn good selection," said Bryan Dezio, who also owns and operates a construction company but has nearly two decades of experience in the food industry, including at the Cheesecake Factory and J B Quimby's in Henrietta.

Early morning offerings include breakfast sandwiches and breakfast pizzas, muffins, doughnuts and bagels, he said.

There's seating for four inside the small shop and outdoor seating for eight patrons at the storefront that formerly housed Pontillo's Pizza, next to the Penfield Corner Store. Capone's is more geared for takeout and delivery than in-person dining, Dezio said.

The eatery is a different restaurant from Capone's Bar and Italian Eatery on Empire Boulevard in Penfield, a casual Italian restaurant that opened last year bythe brother and sister team of Antonia and Alex Poggi.

Dezio and his girlfriend Gena Poggi helped the siblings (her children) establish the business, where he served as executive chef, and decided to start a restaurant of their own. The Empire Boulevard Capone's seats 155 inside and another 30 to 40 people on outdoor patios. It has a full bar and features live music on weekends.

Capone's on Penfield Road first opened its doors on Saturday. It is open daily, opening at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends, closing at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. on Fridays and 2 a.m. following the Saturday hours, into Sunday.
