This new Italian restaurant from Mexico hopes to turn Wynwood into Amalfi Coast

A new Italian restaurant with Mexican roots is opening in Wynwood.

From Grupo Mandolina comes Giorgina, a concept based on the hospitality group’s popular Mandolina restaurant in Mexico City, which opened in 2020.

Located across the street from Beaker & Gray, Giorgina is an open-air restaurant, 4,500-square feet with seating for 130 diners. The design, created by Bea Pernia of Bea Interior Design and Jafif Arquitectos from Mexico City, includes a foliage-covered ceiling decorated with 5,000 lemons, all so you can imagine you’re dining on Italy’s Amalfi coast instead of on North Miami Avenue.

General Manager Juan Carlos Briones calls the space “a casual, neighborhood-like setting.”

“Our goal is to celebrate the rich tapestry of Italian flavors while paying homage to the vibrant culture of Mexico City,” he said in a statement.

Led by executive chef Hector Caspio and chef consultant Federic Tischler, the menu will offer dishes like grilled octopus and cannellini beans, whole roasted orata (gilt-head bream) with garlic confit and veal scallopini. There are also pasta dishes and small pizzas, plus housemade desserts like gooseberry panna cotta and chocolate cake.

The restaurant will be open for dinner daily and will host a brunch on the weekends with specialties like French toast, croissant eggs Benedict and chilaquiles. There’s also a robust cocktail menu full of drinks with Italian and Mexican liqueurs and a variety of signature cocktails.
