Itawamba County Schools superintendent Trae Wiygul to retire at end of school year

Dec. 7—FULTON — In an unexpected move, the head of the Itawamba County School District has announced his pending retirement.

During their Monday meeting, members of the ICSD School Board approved the retirement of Itawamba County Superintendent of Education Trae Wiygul, effective June 20, 2024. He was appointed to head the county school district, which includes three high schools and five elementary schools, in 2018.

The board did not announce Wiygul's replacement on Monday.

Wiygul has been an educator for nearly three decades, with the majority of those years spent in Itawamba County schools.

After beginning his teaching career at Mooreville in 1996, he taught at Dorsey Attendance Center for three years before being named assistant principal, and later principal, of the school.

In 2006, Wiygul became the assistant principal and athletic director at Itawamba Agricultural High School. In 2008, he took over as the high school's principal, a position he held until he replaced Michael Nanney as the Itawamba County School District superintendent of education, becoming the first superintendent in the county's history to be appointed rather than elected.

Wiygul is the son of former Itawamba County Superintendent of Education F.G. Wiygul.
