Itawamba man charged with second degree murder

Sep. 12—FULTON — A Friday evening altercation escalated to gunfire in Itawamba County, leaving one man dead and the other facing murder charges.

Deputies with the Itawamba County Sheriff's Department responded to a reported shooting on Deck Taylor Road in Golden a little after 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.

The responding officers found one adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, where he was pronounced dead.

Itawamba County Coroner Shelia Summerford identified the victim as Tyler Ward, 28, of Golden.

As detectives began investigating the shooting, a suspect turned himself in at the Itawamba County Jail. After evidence from the scene and processed and the suspect questioned, Jay Alexander West, 27, of Fulton, was charged with second degree murder.

During West's initial appearance, Itawamba Justice Court Judge John Bishop set bond at $300,000. He remains incarcerated.

The case will be presented to the next Itawamba County grand jury.
