The average Nashville fare is about $350

The average fare for a one-way ticket from Nashville International Airport in the first three months of 2022 was $310.58. That's $61.63 more than the average ticket sold in the first quarter of 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

In the last quarter of 2022, fares from Nashville were $349.47, on average, including additional fees.

"Prices have generally been rising since the beginning of the year," said Sally French, travel expert at NerdWallet.com. "The typical cost of a trip in the first quarter of 2023 increased by 9% since December. The average airfares are up 2.7% since April, suggesting that prices are rising into the busy summer travel season."

French said disruptions like the systemwide winter-weather failures that stranded passengers for days last year aren't as likely.

"In general, air travel chaos has also seemed to subside," French said. "That’s not to say that no flights will be impacted by technical problems or worker shortages, but in general, airlines are adding more routes and more flights. It’s still important to have a backup plan for your travels."

To be safe, checked baggage should be free of essential items and travel insurance is a good idea on complicated trips, she said.

There are fares as low as $59

Avelo Airlines will begin its new service from Nashville to Wilmington, Delaware on June 22 and seats were available Thursday for $59. The route leaves on Thursdays and Sundays.

Southwest Airlines offers $59 Atlanta fares and $79 tickets to destinations throughout Florida, North Carolina and Georgia this summer.

"We’re proud to carry more Middle Tennessee air travelers than any other airline and serve our Nashville customers with nonstop service to 56 cities on 167 flights a day this summer," a statement to The Tennessean from Southwest Airlines said. "We've never charged a change fee in our history, and we're the only major air carrier to offer two checked bags for free."

A ticket to Amarillo, Texas in August is going for $148, and an Austin flight is available for $95 on Southwest.

Low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier Airlines often charge more fees for seat assignments and carry-on and checked baggage. But there are many good deals for a quick getaway.

Spirit has roundtrip flights as low as $88 to Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Las Vegas and Newark, New Jersey.
